Here's a side view of the turning that provides a better view of the textured surface that resembles corn. The rising brown Walnut 'husks' resemble the outer layers of a corn stalk that hasn't been picked. Height is 12 inches.
This 12-inch tall vase was turned from a block of Walnut. A 3-point multi-axis approach was used to create the twist. Texturing and coloring were added in the carved sections between the rising 'stalks'. When I finished the piece it reminded me of a stalk of corn with strands of brown husk...
I tried to make it look like a hollow for was emerging from this hunk of burl. About 9 inches high, finished with shellac sealer and lacquer sprayed from a can.
2 of a 10 piece wall art commission, Norfolk with some Paduak accents. Turned to an ogee platter, carved, design and pyro. Each is different but under the same graphic theme.
A sort of a basket illusion. 5 1/2" tall, 3 1/2" diameter. Cherry. Turned, burned, dyed, sanded, painted, and reactive paints. Pretty much what I was going for from the get-go.
Goblet with the burl surface on the exterior of the bowl (and top of the foot). Big Leaf Maple, about 6-1/4" tall (bowl is 3-1/4" diameter). Stem is hard maple dyed with India ink. Finish is spray lacquer.
This is an off cut from a fence post that I saved for a long time before turning this. I managed to preserve the milled texture of the post (and I preserved a crack as well :-) ) on the top surface. 6" dia. Shellac finish.
