Not sure what kind of Oak this is. 11 x 3 1/2 inches 1/4 inch thick
First turned August ‘21, final turned last week.
I used a vinegar/steel wood solution for the darkening. Quite surprised at how dark this got. Took about an hour for full color.
Finished with Danish oil
Black Cherry bowl and White Oak base. This was my second big project during my foot recovery (alongside the cherry bowl I previously posted), and was also my submission for the SWT deconstruct/construct challenge. I am a little out of my element there, but this was a fun way to contribute. I...
I wanted to create a tribute to the Ukrainian people and the battle against the Russians I chose the blue and yellow for their flag colors and the V motif for their ultimate victory over the Russians. While turning the piece I encountered an unseen bark inclusion which I was able to deal with...
As remembered in a whimsical manner from long ago as a former scuba diving instructor.... Aside from the large seashell there are 18 other smaller turnings incorporated into the the piece. Measures 12" x 10" x 8".
Carl Benz is widely regarded as the world's first practical modern automobile and was the first car put into series production. The gas vehicle was patented and unveiled in 1886. My turning/carving is 11” x 8” x 9” of maple, walnut and water based dye. For turners I should tell you that there...
This is a piece of Black Walnut crotch wood that reminded me of a guitar, so I put in a rosette. The inlay is a mixture of turquoise, key filings and a bit of dyed woodchips. It is 18” x 16” at the widest parts and about 2” tall. It is finished with Danish oil.
This bowl is Big Leaf Maple Burl and is shaped as an elegant ogee with a foot. Turned to 1/8" wall thickness and finished with wax. Size is approx. 6 inches in diameter and 2.75 inches tall. The burl on this one is really spectacular!
This storm damaged tree was harvested on a mountain side and a ZIP line set up several times was used to move the wood.. This large bowl has a battle scar likely from being bounced off a rock face, you can see a crack near the rim on the far side. The piece was once turned, wet sanded to 320...
Bradford Pear turned into a bag of sand form. I really enjoy these curves and form, as it's essentially an extended and exaggerated calabash with an outflowing rim (picture the top half of this removed). I chose a natural edge orientation because it includes a nice color contrast and it adds...
Black Walnut, bleached, red transtint, pierced. 15"x2", no finish, thus "Unfinished" this was just a practice piece, so I spent no time refining or finishing. More of a proof of concept...
Something a little different. This piece is made with Jatoba. It started as a fairly standard vase form that was then cut apart into this sculptural shape. The inside in textured with rotary cutters and colored with acrylics.
The Segmented Woodturners chapter is having a challenge. Everyone has to turn the same segmented bowl with dimensions specified. It is then up to each person to add things to it to make it some form of creature. Working with my grandson, we turned it into a lidded box that hopefully looks...
Banksia is a beautiful coloured timber but is quite difficult to work as it is is very open grained and quite soft. I think it suits this project though as I was going for a clay pot feel for the finished piece. This turning is inspired by African clay pots which I like for their rustic...
If you think this one is just another run of the mill round-and-brown, with poorly finished surface at that, check this out, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nERL2qV3bjw.
"Loony Bird" is finished and ready to be sold in S Bend .
Approx 4 inches tall and 6 inches long. Turned, cut apart, reassembled, carved, wood burned and dry brush painted.
