Summer's over, thought I'd give something big a try. This is going to be interesting!
That's a great looking bowl, David.Felt good to turn a piece of green wood last night. Walnut crotch, turn the mating side today and then finish the bottom of some second turned bowls.

I have done the same thing in the past and made a couple natural edge heart bowls. For some reason I didn’t even think about it for this one. Thanks for sharing! You control the heart shape by how much of the vee in the Y of the crotch is inside the circle of the blank.
Here are few slides I show in demos on layout

I use a disc which a diameter on it. Position the blank on the disc so the vee is in the blank
Set blocks with a corner on the diameter and the center of the bowl opening is between the block corners

I drill a center hole for the spur drive then use the disc to cut the blan round

If one upper part of the Y is smaller you get sort of a mitten shape.
All the slides
Like that leg shape!
Hahah!Channeled my inner @Alan Weinberg. I really liked the look of the coins, so gave it an attempt with the LatheEngraver. I just used a couple of pieces of stock I already had to cut the coins, so not a lot of thought went into the color contrast. One side was spaced better than the other. To do all the pocketing for both sides took 1 hour, 12 minutes. There were two cuts done for each pocket. The first actual made the pocket in the bowl. The coins were glued in, and then a second run was done to remove most of the material to make room for the next coin.

They were milled right then. The log sat for two years. I am getting them today. He milled them up and texted me as soon as they were done. I will put them on my storage rack and keep an eye on the moisture content. Will paint the ends but don't think it will do much now. Those look like the picture was taken right after milling. Have you seen current condition images?

What!! Midnight!! I already was three hours asleep by then! Why do you subject yourself to this haha?! Just kidding, a good bowl is worth the late hours and this one is no exception, really nice color and grain. Here’s a big brother to the other Magnolia rough out I posted. This one has some interesting figure and inclusions. Should be about 14” diameter and 8-9” deep when finished. Bonus photo of me looking ragged after finishing hollowing it around midnight 😂

Looking good! Did you plan for the flats on top? I like the look. Thanks to @David Wyke (thanks for posting your heart bowls) I started a heart bowl for my cardiac rehab group. As David said, there is a lot of sanding and I am just starting to sand this one. It is red oak about 10 1/2’ in diameter. First time I have ever turned red oak and turned just fine. I had started with a thicker piece of ash, but when I turned it around and removed the tailstock to clean up (level) the inside the tenon sheared. I’ll put it between centers and cut a new tenon for a bowl.

Piece of apple.

Well.....for those waiting to see what I made with the apple wood. Apparently a lot of shavings and a piece for the wood stove. I tried gluing the piece multiple times but it just wasn't to be.
On a positive note my wall thickness is much better!
