This piece was created from a highly spalted piece of maple. It measures 14" w by 3" h and was made for use as a fruit bowl. It is slightly deeper than a platter but shallower than a bowl of this size. Mahoney's Walnut Oil finish was used as this piece is intended for food use...
This was a good exercise for me in light, sharp tool control, something I needed. The bark was loose and impossible to retain so I used a felt tip to blacken the rim. It has a round bottom, 1/16 walls, and is 9.75x8.75x3. I sealed with Deft and finished with Russ mix. Comments and suggestions...
I turned this spalted maple pot 4.75x4.5x3 from a chunk I found in the woodlot getting firewood. I had to turn it when I saw the spalting in the end and this is what resulted. The pot has a round bottom and squatted as it dried. The finish is several coats of Waterlox. I am starting to like...
This is a spalted maple bowl I turned for my cousin's wedding gift approximately 12"x5".
This was also my first use of the woodburning kit I got at the AAW Symposium.
This is a multi-wood box, all pieces turned from end grain combining spalted beech for the body, East Indian rosewood for the lid, and spalted beech for the lid inlay. This box is a little less than 2 3/8" in height and diameter.
A simple bowl turned from a piece of spalted Norway Maple. This piece was roughed out as a demonstration piece during a course that I taught at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts earlier this year.

From stump in front yard. Yellow bellied sap suckers killed the tree about 6 years ago. Beautiful spalting! 5 1/4 in. tall, 4 1/4 in. wide, 1/8 in. thick, very light. Finished with water-born acrylic, waxed.
This hollow form/vase is made from a single piece of old growth Spalted Curly Ambrosia Maple and segmented with Walnut veneer.
It is 6 3/8 inches tall by 4 1/4 inches in diameter.
The finish is shellac and wax.
This was a piece my Dad picked up while working on the horse pasture. He handed it to me, and several months later I gave it back like this for his birthday.
3.5" x 4" Laquer Satin finish.
This one had a baby brother but it cracked in pieces on the final pass on the lathe.

Cracked, spalted, worm holes, branches, ebony color, walnut color, you name it this piece of wood had it.

Art from firewood!
Last year I attended an all day Dale Nish and Nick Cook demo in Atlanta. I had a great time and even bought raffle tickets for a chance on the demo items. Unfortunately (or fortunately) by the time my...
