I acquired some pecan from a prominent potter here in NC - Ben Owen III. His grandfather planted the tree in the Seagrove community and I have been making a small collection of hollow forms from it. This piece was turned from an upper limb section so it still has the pith in it. The pieces...
I'm still a novice or beginner with wood turning. I have built a bunch of pens but looking to take my skills up a notch. Our AAW chapter has a "Bring Back Box" which is given to a member by drawing their name. I got it. The box is about 6x6x6. We are to turn something that fits in the box and...

Spalted birch HF with ebony finial. I added a small ebony foot on this one. Measures 5" dia. x 12" tall. Finished with antique oil and buffed.
It has been awhile since I've had any real shop time but finally I did. My friend Joan Kelly gave me a spalted birch log and this is half of it. It measures 5" dia. x 9" tall to the top of the Ebony Finial. Finished with antique oil and buffed. This started out with a 1/2" opening...
This hollow form is turned from end grain, spalted maple. It came extremely close to the burn pile several times. It was really punky, has worm holes, and moldy. The tear out was nearly impossible to overcome. It measures 7.5 inches by 5.75 inches and is finished with wipe-on poly.
All...
This started turning as a bowl. From bowl to chip and dip platter, the route included a bent gouge - to hang on the wall and a piece of the work piece flying around my head. That forced the design decision to go with the high center and lower outside. The tree was cut down by a neighbor for...
This is the second required photo for the contest. This shot shows one leaf after extensive hand sanding (with the torn up hands to prove it) and about 4 coats of pre-cat lacquer.
This is the same wood as the plate I showed in Richmond. These trees line our street. So I grabbed a leaf off...
This is my first contest entry. This is the required setup photo 1 showing the ring still on my lathe in the upper left, the cut ring at the bandsaw in the upper right and the 8 pieces in the lower right.
Spalted Maple. Ring is approx 4" wide and 9.5" diameter.
This is one of 3 hollow pieces turned within 24 hrs of taking a mountain ash down in my front yard that was almost dead. Piece is 4 in. wide and slightly less high and exhibits spalting. Finish is 3 coats of tung oil .
All I can say is be carefull what you do because it can come back and bite you ! A few weeks ago I sent my friend Robin Costelle a finial and challenged him to put something "under it". Well early last week I received a package in the mail from Robin and guess what was in it. The...
