All out of flamed box elder except for the one Birdseye maple lid. About 3 to 4 inches in diameter. Four coats of wipe-on poly and Beall buffed. The grain matchup on the front right and back left box is purely coincidental. I randomly selected thinner blanks for the lids and got lucky on these...
This piece can stand open with both chambers open for access to both salt and pepper at the same time. I used two separated 1/16” brass rod hinges that allow the piece to be separated if needed while ensuring it opens easily and is perfectly true with matching grain pattern.
On this box wanted to make a slight twist to the normal round bottom style. The form is more squat and curvy but keeping some classic design elements like the undercut domed lid and small base. It has a pleasing more "feminine" look shall I say, especially with the darker more royal Kingwood...
I decided to turn another reverse curve box, this time from Honduras Rosewood (Dalbergia Stevensonii) I kept the design simple with the domed lid and continuous flow from top to bottom. Turned hollowed to a thin box style wall, and finished with buffed wax, then gloss lacquer. Size is 3" tall...
I have been waiting years to find the right piece of Pink Ivory. It had to be the right size, color saturation, and something affordable! This piece is it! Turned from Pink Ivory (Berchemia Zeyheri) it is a round bottom edge design, with of course the slight undercut domed lid and elevated foot...
On this box I really wanted to try out the reverse curve feature. It is a new shape but still with some of my signature details, such as the slight undercut rim, small base and domed lid. Turned from figured Mexican Bocote (Cordia Spp.) this particular piece has fantastic figure and color. It...
I wanted to try a new lid design to go along with my tapered bottom design and raised foot. It kind of looks like a cathedral or raised top, hence the name. Wood is Black and White Ebony and is turned to a thin wall. Finished with wax and gloss lacquer. Size is 1 7/8" diameter and 3" tall. I...
Now, back to the boxes....this little box is similar to my Masur Birch one I made but has a few changes. The overall shape is more compact and only the bottom edge is rounded, which I think looks better. It also features a slightly undercut domed lid design and a foot, which makes it appear like...
This box, similar to the bell box, but slightly different, has a very small reverse curve on the top, rounded bottom, and an undercut domed lid design. Wood is Masur Birch, in which I just received a new stock of five 2.25"x 2.25"x 12" squares! Hollowed to a thin wall and finished with wax and...
Fresh off the symposium, it's time to get back to turning what I know best, more boxes!! This one is from a stunning blank of Amboyna Burl (Pterocarpus indicus). Turned as a cylinder variant, it has a slight hourglass shape and a undercut, domed lid. Size is approx. 2 inches in diameter and 3...
Feeling better now from Covid and the symptoms are gone, so back to turning! This Honduras Rosewood (Dalbergia Stevensonii) box is turned similar to my TOTW piece but it is a little larger. Turned, hollowed and finished with buffed wax and gloss lacquer. Size is 2.25 inches tall and 2.5 inches...
Back to the cylinder style box, although this one has a few small details added. Turned from Masur Birch--(Betula pendula var. Carelica)--this box has rounded corners on the top and bottom, and a lifted bottom, so the box is not sitting directly on a surface, but elevated to accentuate the...
Here is the box I said I would attempt in the thread "Curious about the source of this box design" I decided to give it a try! It is inspired by Mike Stafford's boxes. Wood is Kingwood- a true Rosewood. Turned, hollowed, and finished with wax and gloss lacquer. Size is approx. 2 inches tall and...
Black and White Ebony box in a new style shape. I am trying to develop new shapes other then the straight sided boxes. This box has a slight undercut lid. The wood is incredible to turn and with sharp tools really does not need much sanding. Turned, hollowed and finished with gloss lacquer...
Yet another box, this time turned with Kingwood. A true Rosewood (Dalbergia Cearensis), it has a nice straight grain and interesting color variation. It also is very dense and easy to turn. The lid detail on the box is undercut just slightly and then domed as it goes toward the top. There is a...
This box is turned as a cylinder box with a slight curve in the profile. The wood is Marblewood. It is pretty hard to work, but with sharp tools and a light touch it turns nicely. I let the wood show and kept the design somewhat simple. Inside is hollowed and outside is finished with wax and...
This more elegant box is from a stick of 2x2 Ziricote. The wood is really quite beautiful! Turned, hollowed, and finished with gloss lacquer. I want to keep working of boxes to refine the style and shape to make it my own. Size is approx. 3 inches tall and 2 inches in diameter. Also my old photo...
This pagoda box is turned with three different levels. They are all hollowed and finished on the bottoms. Each level has a friction fit lid. There is also a slight sapwood element in the front of the box. Wood is New Guinea Striped Ebony. Finished with gloss lacquer. Size is approx. 3.5 inches...
This box has a three ring inlay but now the black accents go all the way around the maple. It is a slight design change from my Tulipwood box. Box is Cherry and the inlay is African Blackwood and Maple burl. Size is 3" tall and 2.25" in diameter. Finish with gloss lacquer.
