This box is turned as a cylinder box with a slight curve in the profile. The wood is Marblewood. It is pretty hard to work, but with sharp tools and a light touch it turns nicely. I let the wood show and kept the design somewhat simple. Inside is hollowed and outside is finished with wax and...
This more elegant box is from a stick of 2x2 Ziricote. The wood is really quite beautiful! Turned, hollowed, and finished with gloss lacquer. I want to keep working of boxes to refine the style and shape to make it my own. Size is approx. 3 inches tall and 2 inches in diameter. Also my old photo...
This pagoda box is turned with three different levels. They are all hollowed and finished on the bottoms. Each level has a friction fit lid. There is also a slight sapwood element in the front of the box. Wood is New Guinea Striped Ebony. Finished with gloss lacquer. Size is approx. 3.5 inches...
This box has a three ring inlay but now the black accents go all the way around the maple. It is a slight design change from my Tulipwood box. Box is Cherry and the inlay is African Blackwood and Maple burl. Size is 3" tall and 2.25" in diameter. Finish with gloss lacquer.
This box is a fun idea on how to dress up the tops of lidded boxes. I got the idea from a fellow OVWG member. There are many choices/combos one can do! I chose to go with Figured Maple for the box, African Blackwood for the rings and Tulipwood for the discs. There is also a small defining black...
Yet another box, this time made from a stunning piece of spalted teak burl. This style is more of a dome shaped box. Size approx. 2" tall and 2" in diameter. Finished with gloss lacquer.
My first segmented piece… I used maple with walnut veneer to give a “grout” line look. Top and bottom rings are from walnut to contrast and tie together. Lid is curly maple with walnut knob, reflecting the box shape.
A box made from Willow, with quilted ash lid. Knob is also Willow for symmetry. Two bottom lines are burned in with guitar string, and the line on the rim of the lid is burned in with a piece of Cocobolo wood.
Poplar lidded hollow form; hard maple finial lid ebonized with black transtint black dye; 10.5” total height, 6” diameter; finished with Watco Danish Oil, Natural color; (Cindy Drozda inspired finial)
Pinocchio ran off to a new home in Texas. However I’m guessing many of you didn’t know Pinocchio had a sister. Yes and she has the same bad habit. Here her hackenberry body with a bloodwood accent has an 18” cherry nose. But she wasn’t alway like this as seen in the following picture.
Spring Tulips was inspired by some craftsman style pottery photos I ran across. Breaking from my usual mold I decided to try some new ideas which included my first attempt at doing feet on a piece. The field texture was done with a tiny carbide ball tip. The colors are mixed TransTint dyes...
