This bocote clamshell box was turned from some wood a friend sent me and I gave him the box. It finished up at 1 3/4" tall and 3" in diameter. It is one of the few successful boxes I have turned in bocote as most pieces of that wood seem to have wind checks when I purchase it.
Here is my second box in Verawood. This is an unusual wood in that it is very heavy, dense and oily but cuts cleanly and polished up beautifully. This box is 1 3/4" tall and 3" in diameter.
Another Mothers Day gift for Grandma ... A round bottom Box Elder hollow form with a little burl and some beautiful bright reds. It sure is some pretty wood.
Its a little one ... 2 1/2" tall by 4 1/2" wide.
I went with a little wider opening on this one, I think it fits the...
A couple of small Hollow Forms turned from the scrap pieces of Box Elder burl. The scrap pieces were to nice to burn and I like turning small stuff, its quick and easy. Love that burl grain!
Rough turned green and then nuked to dry them out. Around 3 inches tall and a wall thickness of a...
Here is a little box in Santos Rosewood about 2" tall and 2 3/4" in diameter. In the picture it almost looks like it is the same size in both directions...Comments appreciated.
First, I am not sure that the wood is Chestnut. A relative had two good-sized pieces, which I have been using for family gifts. These, the smaller fits inside the larger, are for one of our daughters who is graduating from college next week. The 3-sided one is about 5" x 4 x 4 while the...
A slightly different take on a snap lid box as the lid has a tenon that allows it to fit snugly into the body of the box. In curly big leaf maple this box is 2 1/4" in diameter and 2 3/4" tall.
I cleaned up the shop today and found a couple of Box Elder burl caps laying under one of the benches so off to the lathe I went...
The HF is about 1 1/2 inches tall. I like the form but dont like the lip, its to big and to sharp of an angle into the transition, should of rounded it like I...
The vessel is Box Elder burl with some beautiful bright reds and a few bark pockets. Its 5" tall, 4 1/2" wide, 1 1/2" opening on top and 1 3/4" at the base. Sanded to 1200 grit, finished with Waterlox and buffed with carnauba wax.
Comments/critques always welcome.

Well this piece started out to be a vase 6 inches taller than what is shown here ... now I guess its a bowl? I got the outside all shaped and sanded. It was going to be my biggest piece yet and I was quite pleased with myself, nice flowing lines and beautiful grain.
I started hollowing out...
I hate it, my wife loves it... go figure!
Thought I would post it and see what you all thought.
Box Elder burl. 13" wide, 8" tall and 1/4"+ thick ... I left it a little thick so more of the burl spears would be left along the edge. Sanded to 1200 grit, soaked with BLO...
The finial is a 3 piece w/Ebony and Paduak. 3.5x6.5
I had a "design opportunity." While shortening and flattening the bottom I "designed" a nice little crack on the rim. It now is carved out for a place to put your finger to pry it open. Decent save.
The piece was...
