After this bowl was roughed out, two large cracks opened radially from the pith area. In the spirit of "waste not want not" I decided to finish the bowl and present it to some of my west coast co-workers as a repository for their favorite food: peanuts!

I used some stock left over from other projects to turn this woodworker's mallet. The handle is walnut with a very distinct demarkation line between the heart and sap woods. It extends into the head about 2 1/2" and is attached with 2-part epoxy. The head is pear.
Overall Length...
This 8"w x 6"h vessel was made from an Oakland, CA. walnut tree that was removed. After turning and finishing, the outer surface was pyrographically embellished. The finishing detail was an ebony collar.
Spalted Maple Hollowform with Walnut base. 6" x 5". Pierced, mild Lacquer finish.
Yes, it was intended to look like this and not a "design opportunity". At least THIS time it was.
Made it as a donation to a gallery for their 5" x 5" exhibition and sale...
This is made from a large plank of sapwood, which I ebonized using vinegar and steel wool. I never could have afforded the heartwood. All of it was turned into gunstocks, and the sawmill operator earned a years pay out of the one log.
16x7 Walnut chip and dip bowl. The top part is 3" deep and the stand is an additional 3" piece of walnut providing a deep well for the dip. A void in the upper walnut was filled with red colored epoxy.
