  1. Brooke

    Brooke

This hollow form vase is turned from end grain, blistered maple. The grain pattern reminds me of river rock at the bottom the stream I used to play and fish in as a kid. It is 10 tall and 5.5 wide. It is finished with Waterlox.

  4. Yew Family Portrait

    Yew Family Portrait

Few people like cutting sections out the side wall of their vases, however I had few options when the small yew vase started cracking a year later. It forced me to come up with something new. Now I make them all that way.
  5. Spiraled Sycamore Vase

    Spiraled Sycamore Vase

Finish turned green from section of log, dried, spirally carved and dyed with an airbrush. The piece was allowed to dry and move indoors. Movement was retained due to finish turning the base to retard end checking. Dharma fiber reactive dyes were sealed with 3 coats of Waterlox Tung oil and...

    Wings of Chance

This piece is a natural edge vase turned end grain from a Pecan crotch having a slight twist in the branches. The wood was dry from curing in the shop for about 2 years. The bark remained in good condition but was stabilized. The vase was sanded to grade 400, with melamine sealer applied at...

  12. Mulberry pieces

    Mulberry pieces

Get more photos & details on my site. From a mulberry branch. The vase is an end grain, natural edge design and the bowl was the left over wood still on the chuck when I parted off the vase. Too pretty to waste. Turned wet down to about 1/16" and allowed to warp. Vase is 4...

This is a piece of cottonwood that has some bark inclusion around the mouth of the vase. It has a patina type finish which is a cross between gold and bronze.
  14. Grandma's Vase 5319

    Grandma's Vase 5319

This is a slightly different version of what I refer to as a "Grandma's Vase". My previous post 5318 was what I remembered the shape to be, while this one more represents what I feel the shape should be. Slightly longer curve to a slightly shorter neck. About 9 3/4 inches tall and...
  15. Spalted Pecan Vase

    Spalted Pecan Vase

This is a 15" by 9" spalted Pecan Vase hollowed with the elbotool. Stress Cracks are embelleshed with Cocobolo Dust and Brass & Gold shavings.

    Melinda's Vase

Ambrosia Maple vase, about 6 1/4" tall and 3 1/4" diameter. My goal was to make a present for my 'adopted' daughter, and to turn a smooth and fair curve, as well as a turned out collar. Comments and critiques welcome. Finish is lacquer.
  17. Dyed Maple Vase

    Dyed Maple Vase

This peice was inspired by a thread on one of the wood forums a number of weeks ago about dyed pieces, including a significant link to Micheal Allisons work. It's a piece of lightly spalted maple that I dyed using transtint (red, black & yellow) mixed with water then sprayed by a Harbor...

  19. Maple Vase II

    Maple Vase II

This is a second 5"x6" maple vase with the proportions changed for a different effect. Turned green, finished with one coat of lacquer.
  20. Maple vase

    Maple vase

In further trials with the ogee shape I decided to do my first vase. This was green hard maple that had a larger heart than normal which I like for the contrast with the sapwood next to the bark. I enjoyed this turning as it is different than other turnings I have done. If the pith is stronger...
