I used acrylic paints, India ink, branding, pyrography, and semi gloss lacquer topcoat
Two in cherry and one in spalted maple, all about 3 inches in diameter. For this photo I put a small led battery-powered lamp in the bottom. Can you figure out how I make them?
This is my first attempt to create something similar to Jim McLain's wonderful works. I have a long way to go to reach his level, but happy with the coloring of my "stone work".

Vases turned for holiday gifts. The body is Maple, the slanted feature ring is Acacia and Birch. These are 5 inches tall and 2-1/2" in diameter. Inspired by the work of Sue Harker.
This vessel was turned from a piece of spalted hackberry and the ring is African blackwood. It is 7 1/2” in diameter and 6 1/4” tall. The finish is a flat acrylic spray.
Cherry, Maple, and Walnut Segmented Vase … 7-1/2” tall, 4” in diameter. Finish is wipe-on poly.
The staves are compound miters about 4" long, glued into a ring. I used tongue & groove construction to join the staved ring to the maple rings.
These vases were conceived as a Passe' Passe' Set. That is, when used they give the appearance of one color ball "jumping" to the other vase. Of course, you can also use a single vase to produce one color ball or several balls of different colors.
Made from Pear, after turning, piercing, and carving, l tried bleaching the piece, but it just did not have that porcelain look. I sat there thinking about what to do and saw some Milk Paint on my shelf. I gave it a few coats, added a finish, and buffed it slightly, l was pleasantly surprised...
