Maple Platter Roughed out. 3 inches thick and 18 inches in diameter. Nice crotch coloring with a colorful bark inclusion running through the near side of the platter.
This maple platter is 16" diameter textured with an air powered needle scaler and decorated with black gesso and burned designs inlayed with brass BB's.

Some time ago I posted some preliminary pictures in another forum of a 16" bubinga platter I was working on that included some carving to mask a defect. A could weeks ago I finally got it completed and "finished". Given the shop renovation in progress, I ended up top coating it...
Too bad it is going to darken. But then, maybe the people who have never seen Padauk before will believe me when I tell them it is wood. Now I have to convince them by showing them the little knot in the bottom piece of sapwood.
This is made from a large plank of sapwood, which I ebonized using vinegar and steel wool. I never could have afforded the heartwood. All of it was turned into gunstocks, and the sawmill operator earned a years pay out of the one log.
