12.5 inch maple platter with acrylic paint. I had a hard time thinking of a title for this platter. I finally came up with a title that I like. Anthesis is the period during which a flower is fully open and functional.
This walnut was sawn in 1990 and then air dried for 31 years. I call it a platter, some a shallow bowl. It is 23.5 inches in diameter by 2.5 inches high. The long period of air drying produced very rich, chocolate brown colours. It is finished with 8 thin coats of wipe-on poly.
This 18" platter started out as a waste piece from a larger blank but I just couldn't let it go. I really loved the grain patterns and when it cracked I used epoxy as a filler. The finish is tung oil.
Working on adding a beam to my workshop. Today I cut it to length and had a 12 x 12 inch piece left over. Has anyone tried turning LVL? I was thinking of a platter blank which would give me concentric rings. (LVL = laminated veneer lumber sort of like plywood but each layer has the grain...
Dyed rim maple platter 10" diameter. Chestnut dyes and lacquer finish. Rim has embedded copper braid partially turned away to create the pattern. Alternate view to more clearly show the copper braid detail.
From "Symbols of Person, Series 1", this is "Untitled." (Though in my own personal space, I call it, "A Squid Ate my Bowl.") 5 3/4 in. diameter x 1 1/4" height, round-bottomed bowl, made from dyed plywood. Pyrographized.
