Crotch white oak, about 18" in dia. The idea was to get the crotch area to be like the Milky Way across the sky. Psalm 18:2 is my life verse, my life was a train wreck until I found God, He was my fortress to protect me until my life stabilized.
This is a shallow bowl (or deep platter) 11” diameter and 1 3/4” tall. The wood is ambrosia maple. This bowl has the most significant ambrosia staining I have ever had. It is sold.
This is a Black Ash burl with dyes and a lacquer finish, about 8.5" x 1.5" I had never worked with Black Ash burl before, so this is a practice piece to become familiar with it before tackling a larger hollow vessel of the same wood.
15" diameter walnut platter, featuring 39 equally spaced decorative arcs on the rim. This was made from one solid piece of walnut. The arcs were cut using a custom indexing jig.
After turning boxes for the last 2 months (whew!) it's time for a change. This seasonal platter is turned from hard maple and embellished with colorful stencils. The bird and grass stencils are on the right side and the flower cluster is on the left. Finished with wax only as I like my platters...
The pith section from between two bowls. Cracks filled with blue epoxy before any turning was done. I think it finished at around 11" diameter. I learned that this type of platter should be tall enough that you can reach your fingers under the rim to pick it up off the table. Fortunately, the...
I took a risk with this one, as I have never attempted this kind of stenciling. The platter is figured maple with two colored designs on the corners. I wanted to keep it simple and elegant. Finished with three coats of semi-gloss lacquer. Size approx. 8"x 2"
Box elder burl with pyrography, 14" dia., 2022. The retinal vasculature of each individual is unique. My signature on this platter is the unique retinal vasculature of my left eye.
Platter in Pecan . Burned eagle pattern colored with pencil. Holes drilled and filled with acrylic to represent the Red , White & Blue. 15 inch diameter. Finish is lacquer.
I really enjoy maxing out the 22" swing on my G0766 and making big platters. But is it generally a bad idea to use a single piece of non-quartersawn Slabs as the material?
I typically ensure the wood is dry-dry; however, I still get the occasional slight cupping which I really want to avoid...
Decided to make another pierced platter. I forgot how difficult it was to pierce 1/8” thickness. Normally I would pierce 1/16”+, but in order to safely handle I do 1/8”.
Cherry wood 14” diameter. C&C
