curly maple turned on two axes, carved, and dyed - 15 to 21 inches high - each 'figure' independently rotates at random intervals, a random fraction of one revolution, and in random direction (really need a movie here!).
I've been looking for a while for some suitable pieces of wood for a series of wall hangings. This is the first off the lathe and shop table. This is big leaf maple burl, about 1 1/2" thick. The original theme is based on the idea of a stone tossed into a pool with ripples spreading...

I call this "Neighbors" because my stupid neighbor decided that every tree on his property had to go. I heard the chainsaws and paid off the landscapers to bring me the trunk with the burl and the main crotch.

Our club presidents challenge of Turn something Weird was last Saturday and this was my entry.
Last year during our clubs Spring Retreat which is two days of hands on turning classes and demonstrations, Jerry Bennett did a demo covering design and how to get out of your box. One exercise...
This is Ambrosia Maple 7" in diameter at the rim and 2" at the base. Bowl is 3" tall and has a nominal wall thickness of 3/8".
3 Walnut stitches are in the limb inclusions for strength and looks. Finish is 3 coats of Watco Danish Oil and a top coat of Waterlox Tung oil...
This is a piece of wood I got from a buddy on a woodworking forum I frequent. I think it pretty much qualifies as "curly" maple. :-) It finished up at about 18" x 14" x 3 1/4". The walls are about 1/2" thick. Finish is Antique Oil and lacquer, 3-wheel buffed. The...
Beautiful grain in both Maple and Walnut - wood salvaged from some of the furniture companies I've worked with. About 4.5" D x 7.5" dia. Any comments welcome.
Approximately 7" dia x 3" tall. I got (free) a nice little piece of hard Maple with some spalt lines along the edge. I added a Lyptus base to give the piece a little height and color. It is surprisingly stable with the solid Lyptus base. Again, I am a newbie turner so I would...
This piece of booked matched curly maple didn't need much to enhance it, so I thought some subtle piercing would work. This piece is a bit deeper and more "bowl-like" than the platter I did with a similar look. About 2" h x 10.5" dia
