I've been looking for a while for some suitable pieces of wood for a series of wall hangings. This is the first off the lathe and shop table. This is big leaf maple burl, about 1 1/2" thick. The original theme is based on the idea of a stone tossed into a pool with ripples spreading outward. The onyx in the center represents the tossed (or skipped) stone. I inlaid the natural voids in the burl with turquoise, hinting at water and perhaps stones on the bottom of the pool glimpsed through the water's surface. The photo doesn't reveal all the turquoise--all of those dark spots are filled with the stone. The piece is about 14" in diameter.
