Cherry is my favorite, nothing like putting that first coat of oil on a finished piece. Looks great!Finishing up a Black Cherry serving bowl as gift for my mom on Mother's Day. This will be about 11" x 3.75" when finished. Just added the first coat of danish oil. I don't make many open bowls like this, so it's a nice change of pace. I added a couple of mediocre beads to the exterior for a bit of functionality.

Promises promises, take care of what is in there, remove the splits. The start of a walnut crotch hollow vessel, probably an urn. Most of the feather figure will be turned away of course, but I can’t stomach the thought of a cylindrical urn. There will be a few small cracks to deal with later during the second turning when it is dried. About 9 inches long, 6 inches in distance. View attachment 63363
I always love that color and the smell, it is a shame that both will disappear, though the good/nice shape will stay, well doneWorking on a piece of red cedar, 12-1/2” x 3-3/4”. First coat of Tried and True Danish Oil applied.

Thank you! Yes, it will disappear over time. I may look for some UV clear protectant to make it last a little longer.I always love that color and the smell, it is a shame that both will disappear, though the good/nice shape will stay, well done View attachment 63405
Geez Louise Odie! That grain pattern is amazing!Pyinma burl.... aka: Asian Satinwood. According to the wood database, the term Asian Satinwood is incorrect, but is a widely used term. I think I'll continue to use the term, simply because Asian Satinwood has more "appeal" !
Extremely porous....really soaked up a lot of DO.....fast! Easy to turn.

I don’t for the oil but I do use a sealer if I plan on using lacquer.Absolutely beautiful! Do you use sanding sealer before you oil cedar?
How did that turn? I've got some I've been dragging my feet on.I turned a large piece of persimmon yesterday. It had a lot of bad places so the size got smaller. Finished piece is about 13" tall.
Sam, I turns really nice. It's hard as woodpecker lips when it's dry but green is no problem. Its bad about cracking when drying so you have to take it slow. How did that turn? I've got some I've been dragging my feet on.
that is some extra pretty box elder. Love that stuff.Box elder hollow form. Roughly 5". Finished with Myland's friction polish. I was going to use wipe-on poly but the can got up and walked out of the shop somehow.
Box elder is great for practicing hollow forms because it's so soft.
