That flute is awfully short and there is no flat milled on the shaft. What sharpening jig would be effective without a flat to register against as the flute gets shorter? Would freehand sharpening be necessary?

You can freehand but Hannes also sells a jig that kind of replicates it. I have this gouge and don’t use it often but on the occasion when I want it at least I have it. I have several of his tools and do use them often. I believe Doug T made the tools to Hannes specifications. The handles are awesome!

I also have that tool and the addition of jig to use it with Hannes' sharpening system. For bowls it removes lots of wood fast!

It has a 3/4" tang and fits into one of my Thompson handles, never cared a ton about Hannes handles, for me one lobe would have been great instead of three.
I love those handles. I can relax my grip a little more and it just stays locked into the position I want. Even better as the arthritis gets worse in my hands.

I hate to ask dumb questions (regardless of how proficient I am at them), but your calipers are very interesting.
If I understand what I am looking at, the top measurement shows mm, this being over 12. The bottom measurement show 1/10ths of inch, this showing exact 5/10ths. But what is the dial measurement showing between 1-2? Thanks,

Edit: Google is our friend. Found a video on Amazon which explained it. Always a good day when I start learning something new.

I too have the Hannes BRG, but mine has a different rear portion. The top by the tang has two flat spots to kinda form a triangle. I can agree with others, it's magnificently fast at roughing a green blank. As far as sharpening, I take the Stewart Batty approach with platforms and 40/40. I sold off my vera grind and wolverine jigs.
