Hey Bill! There are lots of turners and some clubs near you where many are willing to help you get started!
If you want to schedule a visit over towards Knoxville, I'd be glad to give an introduction lesson and send you home with some wood to play with!
(Warning, I always start students with the skew chisel, then move to the spindle gouge, then the spindle roughing gouge, then parting tool, etc... Good fun.

(I do this because I love it. My fee for lessons is a good story or a good joke.)

These two girls (one I knew from my kindergarten class) came for a one-day accelerated lesson. Spindles in the morning, bowls in the afternoon. They made things to take home.

One is now a dedicated woodturner! (the other is busy working on her PHD in pathology)

Thank you for the kind offer. I have found a local club here in the Clarksville area. Will be attending my first turning class give by the club on the 4th Saturday of every month. If I'm headed to Knoxville anytime soon I'll look you up.
