Here is a composite of info from a couple of sources:
A new Woodcraft store will be located at 5824 Brainerd Road; phone 423-701-8001. :D The location is in or near the Brainerd Village S/C. Wayne Loveless will be the manager- it was noted that he did turning instruction at the previous store...
With my cancer surgery only 1 week away, I have been busy getting things ready so that I can keep busy during the 6-8 week recovery period. The surgeon says i will be unable to and not feel like lifting anything over 10 lbs, so, I have been preparing for things I CAN do that are light weight...
Remember to visit my demonstration on Thursday, 3-5pm at San Jose in the Instant Gallery room where as one of the four Emerging Artists I will demonstrate embellishments on turnings.
I'm the first demonstrator and then turn into one of the videographers for the rest of the symposium.
Come...

This is the second in a series that celebrates beginnings. The motif is inspired from gymnosperm cones and shelf fungi. It's made from Afzelia burl and it's 6.5 X 5 inches. I'll have this at the AAW symposium this weekend (June 26-28, 2009).
Comments are welcomed.
Red resin tree burl, 4 X 3.25 inches; carved and textured hollow form.
The title represents a new series where the work represents the potential future of seeds or spores released to face their fate. The empty shell is all that remains behind.
This piece came out to be a little different...
This box was turned following a visit to our club by Jimmy Clewes. I was totally in awe watching him turn one of these in his demonstration. The blank is turned like an airplane propeller on the lathe. I decided that I would have to try one for myself, which is the result shown. Turning this...
Here is a closeup of the first finished butterfly. I just slapped on a quick coat of shellac. It will get sanded and redone.
I really need to come up with a better method of sanding all the groves to remove all the scratches.
I should get about 16 out of this ring, 14 or 15 will have full...
I know this is beyond the deadline but I started it the day after I finished my maple leaf. ;-)
This was a clearance slab of burl, it is some kind of Aussie species, smells like a hamster cage. Dust leaves a sour taste in mouth and it is very oily and clogs sandpaper quickly.
It had a...
This chunk of firewood is ready to be split into pieces and carved into giraffes or llamas depending on the neck size. The ring is 5 inches in diameter and 3-1/2 inches tall. I was inspired by some photographs in a German book of wooden toys.

This is the second required photo for the contest. This shot shows one leaf after extensive hand sanding (with the torn up hands to prove it) and about 4 coats of pre-cat lacquer.
This is the same wood as the plate I showed in Richmond. These trees line our street. So I grabbed a leaf off...
This is my first contest entry. This is the required setup photo 1 showing the ring still on my lathe in the upper left, the cut ring at the bandsaw in the upper right and the 8 pieces in the lower right.
Spalted Maple. Ring is approx 4" wide and 9.5" diameter.
I have to confess I very much enjoy making these pieces, it is a thrill to watch the piece progress from chainsawing in the field to final airbrushing, not to mention everything in between. Even though a good deal of patience is required. This piece has a copper colour with an over spray of a...
