Navajo ceremonial basket design. The symbol is also used to represent Spider Woman, the first Navajo deity. The basket is twelve inches in diameter and the wood is maple. Pyrography and ink were used to create the basket illusion. Donated to SWAT 2019 symposium and selected as an auction item.
Hello. I am new to the forum and am learning about how the forum works.
I have been turning for about ten years but have been more active in the past 2-3 years. Most of my turnings are hollow forms and I am interested in combing turning with power carving, pyrography and painting. I have...
Navajo legend says that a deity carries the sun across the sky on his back and then hangs it on a peg to cool off. After it is no longer glowing he carries it back east during the night. I apologize for the bad iPad picture. Hopefully, I will have a chance to get a better picture before it is...
Navajo Wedding Basket illusion is 12⅝ inch diameter maple. The wedding basket is probably the most well known of all the various Native American basket designs. This piece will be part of the SWAT 2-for-1 drawing coming up next month.
Navajo Wedding Basket Illusion, 14½ inches diameter, 2¾ inches high, maple, beaded, burned, and colored in the style of the traditional wedding/celebration baskets. The wood is thin enough that bright light can shine through between the rows of beads. This piece was donated to the Woodturners of...
My first basket illusion. This was a practice piece. I learned a lot about what does and doesn't work. Maple wood was beaded and then burned to create the basket weave pattern and colored with Prismacolor markers and a clear acrylic topcoat applied.
I wanted to get into hot wire pyrography and away from the soldering iron type units. I built a pyrography controller from a car charger and it worked great! Then the transformer fried:( Of course I was in the middle of a project on a deadline too. Anyways, I'd heard good thing about the...
From "Symbols of Person, Series 1", this is "Untitled." (Though in my own personal space, I call it, "A Squid Ate my Bowl.") 5 3/4 in. diameter x 1 1/4" height, round-bottomed bowl, made from dyed plywood. Pyrographized.
All comments welcome.
From "Symbols of Person, Series 1", this is "Halo." 5 3/4 in. diameter, ogee platter, made from dyed plywood. Pyrographized with an image of the moon, gilded with 22k and 24k gold.
I've been researching/playing with various surface textures, then gilding them. All...

Protecting her nest, a mockingbird swoops boldly upon the cat. These feisty birds show up in our neighborhood every summer. I really enjoy their many vocalizations, which often continue through the night. Our cats just watch them and...

Euginia, pyrography and acrylic paints.
When the hummingbirds show up in our garden, it is a sure sign that Spring is in full swing.
Because I know someone will want to ask The images are created by first laying down all the undertones and texture with pyrography techniques...
Sycamore, pyrography, metal leaf

Cheesecake, quirky like most cats, favored napping in the bathroom sink. A bit different for me, this simple vessel design was selected to allow emphasis to be on the pyrographic image of Cheesecake rather than the bowl.
This is about how something done in all the wrong order can still turn out OK. 8" H x 5.5" D. Started with the form, and near the end I had a design opportunity, so I added the walnut collar. Didn't care for how plain the piece was, so I tried some pyrography to improve it. Luckily...
This shows the ebony Celtic cross I carved for the finial and the Celtic Knot design on the upper band. The same pattern was used on the lower band as well.
