This 7 by 4 inch thin-wall maple bowl has two Monarch butterflies hovering around a milkweed flower. The butterflies are done with Derwent Inktense pencils and the inside is silver blue acrylic. The natural figure of this end-grain maple bowl is highlighted by piercing every second growth ring.

Turned, carved, pierced and textured. A subtly colorful interior sleeve glowing through in contrast with the medieval harshness of the lantern body. Yet another expression of an age old dichotomy..... 8-1/2" x 4-1/2"
Thank you for looking!
A corroded mesh providing a thin veil of safety between an attractive, comfortable, well furnished familiarity and the darkly assumed evil of the unknown. Monsters, poisons and hazards kept at bay while the masses rest safe and secure....or is it a difficult barrier blocking release from a...
I have a number of pieces that I've finished to a point then lost the inspiration. I completed this 5 piece pierced wine set a while back leaving a 95mm x 65mm panel for a label. Since no immediate idea for said label seemed forthcoming it has been setting, quietly awaiting it's day. They always...

Last April, the Barnesville Woodturners asked me to give a remote demonstration of how I make my butterfly rim bowls. Since the intended length was around 90 minutes, I had to record a large part of the presentation. The videos for this presentation show me creating this 7 inch diameter, 4...

This is "Milkweed Butterfly" the third and final luminary I used for the Seattle Woodturners October mini-Symposium. This one was my "just off the lathe" example for the demo and needed pyrography as well as piercing. This photo includes a view of the inner coating. I used Liquitex opal blue...
This now completed 4x6 maple luminary was the example of a nearly complete vessel for my demonstration at the Seattle Woodturners' October mini-Symposium. It is adapted from a Swiss wall hanging from around 1820. This view is in normal everyday room lighting.
Experimenting with interference paints can be a lot of fun! Some of those who visited my demonstration at the Seattle Woodturners October mini-Symposium may recognize this luminary as being pyrographed and ready to start piercing. I call this one Waves of Grass. Sugar maple 4 inch diameter 6...
I decided to put together an assemblage of smaller luminaries. On the left and right are Poplar, the small foreground luminary is white oak and the large pine tree luminary is Sugar Maple. I'm calling it my Pine - Owl Assemblage. If you look closely, you can see that the leftmost and front...
