Box is flamed box elder. The lid is box elder burl with an African Blackwood spire. About 2.5 inches diameter and 5 inches high. Wipe-on poly and Beall buffed.
A friend gave me this piece of teak. It appeared to be old growth as the growth rings are very narrow. About 4 in. diameter and 7 in. tall. The finial has a Cocobolo lid and a Grenadilla spire. Finish is walnut oil with Beall buff.
Black Cherry burl
4” x 4”
Cherry might be my favorite wood. The color and grain are always super rich, it’s a pleasure to turn, and it smells fantastic! Going to take a little break from voids, but the next one will be the focus of a project thread. Hoping to have it ready late-August.
10" tall and pretty thin walls (1/4 to 3/8" at the bottom) for me.
Lots of storms this spring/summer. This sycamore (what this hollow form is on) fell across our road and in the culvert. Most of it is still in the creek. It will take a larger tractor than mine to get out. I did grab a branch...
4” x 4”, finished with shellac and buffed on a wheel
Forms with voids have captured my attention lately. Trying to predict how the void will translate from log to turned form is a fun exercise; I’m always a little surprised (in a good way…usually 😅). This is the thinnest hollow form I’ve turned...
4”h x 3.5”d
Made this piece for a talk I'm giving about design and woodturning at YouTube's annual design conference in August. Kept it simple; classic form, walls turned to about 1/4", and finished with shellac.
Learned how to do this from Greg Stehle at SWAT back in 2022. When I saw his works on the demo table I just thought it was really cool and different. I have another one about to come off the lathe. Will post it when finished. it's about 7" tall with a walnut base and collar.
5.5” x 5.5”; finished with shellac, abrasive paste, and buffed with brown Tripoli.
I have a handful of these 6” cubic blanks of claro, so am going to do a series of these hollow forms. Each will be slightly different, but recognizable as part of the same series. I wanted this one to have a more...
Turned from a manzanita root snag that was hard as woodpecker lips. Luckily no imbedded rocks to deal with. It looks fragile but really is not. About 8".
Cherry hollow form with ornamental cherry opening and copper inserts, 5” wide by 5 3/4” tall. The pyrography appearance was done with a dental drill. The copper inserts are punch outs. Satin lacquer finish.
5.5”h x 6”d; finished with shellac and buffed to a high gloss
Hard to go wrong with this tone and figure. The opposite side of this piece was very punky and required a lot of sanding sealer to stabilize. Started to worry I was chasing sunk cost, but stuck it out and am happy with the outcome...
4.75”d x 4”h
Really pushed myself to keep the opening small on this piece. Learned a lot about tool manipulation, especially the importance of keeping the tool sharp and taking light cuts. Managed to get the walls to about 3/16”…maybe closer to 1/4” at the widest part of the shoulder, as it was...
3.5”h x 4”d
Had to cut down our favorite yoshino cherry last year after we saw signs of rot. I turned this piece on a whim, not sure it would stay together if I went thin, but I managed to get the walls to 1/8” and it held like a champ! Sanded the entire vessel, outside and inside, to 600...
3.5” x 3”
This was the second of two small hollow forms I was able to manage from an old chunk of applewood burl I’ve been saving for a while. Love how the swirly figure curls up from the bottom and fades into the darker wood near the rim. Finished with several coats of shellac and three-stage...
6” x 4”, flaming box elder burl and black walnut
Couldn’t resist keeping the natural edge of this flaming box elder burl intact, so I decided to turn a hemispherical hollow form with a massive void. It wouldn’t stand on its own due to obvious weight distribution issues, so I turned a smaller...
5” x 3”
Turned this piece while it was ~20% MC. The result is some nice movement through the neck and a rippled texture along the shoulder. Applied a couple coats of sanding sealer to help slow the drying process and avoid major splits. Two-stage buff: first with brown tripoli and then with an...
