I was going for the Art Deco look when I created this footed bowl. There are six ginkgo leaves wrapping around the bowl with the base of each leaf forming a foot. The wood is southern magnolia and the finishes are wipe on poly and artist acrylic paints. It is 9.5" in diameter and 4.25" tall.
This view better show how well the Quilted Maple works for water. See, Island on the Sea - Front View, for full description. Turning is about 7" in diameter and 5" to the top of the tree.
Quilted Maple with rounded bottom so it will rock a bit. Island is Alder end grain as the growth rings inspired the shell carving idea. Tree trunk is Curly Maple, painted with black tea (high tannin), allowed to dry and fumed with HOUSEHOLD ammonia in a Tupperware container, left to air out for...
Double Box with Mouths; turned, carved, and painted cherry wood; 8.5"x2.5". It was an incredibly fun process to bring the sketch in my notebook to life.
Made from Pear, after turning, piercing, and carving, l tried bleaching the piece, but it just did not have that porcelain look. I sat there thinking about what to do and saw some Milk Paint on my shelf. I gave it a few coats, added a finish, and buffed it slightly, l was pleasantly surprised...
Turned, carved, textured red maple. Sometimes known as Ambrosia Maple. $40 for a bowl blank, it's ambrosia maple. $40 for a log, it's red maple!
9" diameter made in 2010 or so
Still using the techniques gained from Laurent Niclot, these are a community of turned and carved works. The tips were carved and shaped with rasps. Patterns were pyro-carved followed by multiple coats of dry-brush painting with acrylic paint.

I call these...
Made this teapot a year ago, colored and pyrographed a design over the body and lid, did not like it, sanded it all off, and put it on the shelf waiting for inspiration.
"Live, Laugh, Love"
Picked it up a week ago and had another attempt with a different design. Turned from Pear...
An exploration of the Platonic solids. This is a tetrahedron entirely formed on the lathe and sports an internal spherical gilded hollow/box.
Box Elder, India Ink, Acrylics and gold leaf
6" x 6" x 7"
Redwood burl, 5.75 X 4.5 inches; turned, carved and sandblasted.
The inspiration for this piece comes from scanning electron micrographs of the seed of Castilleja, a hemiparasitic plant in Orobanchaceae. The outer wall of the seed coat collapses in the mature seed, leaving deep cells that...
"When I let go of what I am, I can become what I might be" - Lao Tzu, No. 5
Redwood burl, 5 inches diameter. This one has eight wings (two more than the others in the series).

This is the second in a series that celebrates beginnings. The motif is inspired from gymnosperm cones and shelf fungi. It's made from Afzelia burl and it's 6.5 X 5 inches. I'll have this at the AAW symposium this weekend (June 26-28, 2009).
