First time carving a turning. My name for this particular maple tree is "tear out maple". Seems no matter what I do, I get tear out. West coast big leaf maple. Artist's fixative and Boiled Linseed Oil.
This is a bowl made out of Norfolk Island pine. It is about 9 inches wide and 4 inches deep. It had about 6 coats of boiled linseed oil to make it translucent. It was very hard to show in the photo but light does shine through it. Comments and critiques welcome.
I made this project during an IRD to help me in the kitchen now that Fall is here, and I'll be spending more time creating my favorite dishes.
The pestle is made from figured maple, and I'm not sure about the mortar, although it does have beautiful fiddleback and chatoyancy.
Bowl turned from Koa about 7"x 2 1/2". One of themost beautiful bowl blanks I ever turned. Blank came from Emiliano Achaval who made a shop visit from Maui and we carpooled to the Chattanooga symposium! Thanks, Emiliano!
I was going for the Art Deco look when I created this footed bowl. There are six ginkgo leaves wrapping around the bowl with the base of each leaf forming a foot. The wood is southern magnolia and the finishes are wipe on poly and artist acrylic paints. It is 9.5" in diameter and 4.25" tall.
11" dia Redgum bowl. The beads are burnt and ebonized. I didn't sand the bottom, just a little wire brushing left the tool marks and texture from the scorching as texture. Close up of base in next pic.
Just a very thin bowl turned in poplar. About 8 inches in diameter and 3.5 - 4 inches tall. Finished in Danish oil and Beall Buffing System. Who knew that Poplar can be so pretty. I love this one.
Not sure if this is "crotch" or not. It's my last piece of this wood. It was not identified when I got it. My best guess is Butternut??? Finished with Tried and True Danish Oil and Beall Buffing.
