"The Escapee"
A piece of mesquite that survived several attempts of me trying to use it for something other than a pleasant, decorative vessel. I turned and hollowed it and left a couple of nubbins at the rim to attach the upcoming handle. I originally left the surface smooth but after looking at the voids, my hammered steel bail and lid decided that a more textured surface fit better so off to the Rotary Chisel Spa (101A profile) for a good scratching. The steel parts have been chemicalized and a NIP branch piece provided a lid pull. 7" x 4-1/2". Thank you for looking!
how do you leave the nubbins? And keep the integrity of the rest of the turning?
Just leave a ring where the nubbins should go and hand carve away all the extra wood. It's pretty easy to blend the carved area into the rest of the turning. Similar to the way I and others leave feet on the bottom.
