Pseudopalmus Cherry Bowl

Pseudopalmus Cherry Bowl

The name is a bit of nonsense, but fun. "Fake palm" because to me the texture has the appearance of an endgrain Black Palm bowl. However, the wood is Black Cherry. I created the texture on the exterior with a sharp woodburning tip applied mostly in an upward stabbing motion. I also added a lot of fine lines to make it more interesting. I scrubbed the surface with a nylon brush. The process was tedious and time-consuming, but I really like the end result. The bowl has a calabash shape, and I added a foot because I think the texture benefits from a lift. Finished with hemp oil. 6.5"d x 3.25"h
Beautiful piece, I really like the detail of texturing inside the diameter of the foot.
Thank you Richard! I was originally going to leave the bottom of foot untextured so that the bowl would sit on solid wood, but it looked a bit plain. I turned it concave and the added the texture on the inside. Now the bowl still rests on solid wood, but it looks more interesting. Best of both worlds, functional and fun :).

Simply expert is my first thought! The texture is so nicely done; it’s hard to fathom that it’s your first attempt at it. The results speak for themselves. Your form looks great as does your interior treatment. Fabulous piece Michael!!

Thanks a lot for the nice comment, Russ! In all fairness, I did practice the texture on some smaller things before I committed to going hung ho on a full sized turning. The trickiest part was trying to not burn through to the interior. The walls are around 1/8” thick to the foot, and I got a couple of very light discolorations on the interior endgrain from the pyro. They sanded out without issue, but it was a bit stressful at times! Whew.
