what kind of wood/burl is this?

Maybe elm? Was there any distinctive smell to the wood?
With that concentration of eye buds it makes me think black ash burl. But with not much normal bark to look at, and no leaves, it's a guess.
It looks to me like black ash burl which quite common farther north in MN
No smell, at least that I noticed And no normal bark or leaves.

Well, if you were in the Pacific NW, I would guess big leaf maple, since that is far more common than ash. Not much bark there, but it could be ash.
