are you living on the island now or do you commute........if commute, will you move in with just the outside built and do the inside as you go.........I spent a summer on the eastern shore of Maryland......largest closest town was Easton........we really had a good time......unfinished interior but it was fine for us.......we did do some work on sort of causeway for the duckblind ......we were on the bay, in the boonnies, tried to find it on map, did find Easton......enjoy, and update us as time passes

Charlie:
We're living in the home - it is complete having been built in 2001 - they just skipped over the garage/shop in the process. It was sited in the original plans. I'm in the process of selling my business just south of Seattle - 125 miles south of here. I'll be working Tues thru Thurs down there for the next two years during the transition, while my wife is full time on the island and working in Bellingham daily. I go down on Tuesday a.m., spend two nights with my son and DIL, then return Thursday evenings.
So, the process becomes cumbersome - on the phone trying to get the permits/inspections scheduled. then waiting on Mondays and Fridays for work to proceed or inspectors to review the site. Today it is dealing with the forms for the Natural Resources Assessment, needed to take down the trees and approve the siting, then on to the building permits if all goes well. I'm told the NR Assessment can take 4 - 6 weeks.
It just seems like endless calls and new forms to fill out...talk about boring...I fully believe in protecting the environment, but it seems that if they'd just get off their backsides and come out to look much of this process could be expedited.

I am happy for you and yours.....being in the house.....good luck with the shop......in the future show some pictures of your shop when the island people get to know you and approve of things......its probably a feeling out process and some of the locals probably go back several generations and will be quite proud of it......only in florida are they proud of being from somewhere else.....I do have some florida crackers in the family

down south........pictures of pictures.....excuse the focus.....my mother is the small blonde headed girl with the doll

If it were just the locals this thing would have been done by now. They're great folks - some are original pioneering families, but most are transplants. It's the county planning and development people - all live on the mainland - that are hard to get to, and hard to get them out here to do the assessments...we'll get through it - it's just frustrating.

combatting boredom with turning

I don't like to do large bowls-beyond my attention span.!!!!
I like to get ahold of different woods-that is inspiring (if I can find good color or figure!!!). Makes it more worthwhile obtaining it myself with the help of friends, rather than purchasing the wood. Part of the "art" comes with figuring out how to chain saw it!!!.

My best friend in Mass. saw some cherry burls at a "tag" sale" this fall. Called me and asked if I would like them for my xmas present. (Does the bear S--t" in the woods?????). I just flew there for Thanksgiving and got another friend to bring them to where I can store under tarp. There are 2 big ones and 3-4 smaller ones. Some may have parts that are too far gone, but I managed to bring one smaller one home in the checked luggage. Guess what I am going to do tomorrow?? (unless my daughter decides to "whelp' 15 days early). I get excited with the thought!!!!. Will have to drive the others home this early summer. Gretch
