Howdy everyone!
Tim Storsved here, member at large in North Hudson, Wi. was a cabinetmaker before I became a career physicist. I have been turning off and on since I was 14, so about 48 years. My dad and I did a lot of turning in his shop on the old Powermatic model 45, until he passed in 2010. I miss him dearly. Anyway, I finally have the tools and the space to get serious again, and since dad was an AAW member, I figured I'd join. No chapters nearby, so I may just step up and start one, but we'll see. I am about 4 months away from picking up my dream lathe, and begin turning at scale. I got bit by the big bowl bug about 15 years ago at dad's turning group, so I'm going all in with a Robust American Beauty. My go-to for fun and practice are small toys, tops and rattles, but I have gotten pretty good at knocking out bowls at the max diameter of the late (about 12"). I source a lot of wood locally, and I am fortunate to have locust, black cherry, black walnut, and about all the oak I can carry for the cost of gas to haul it away. I like the way all my troubles disappear as I'm tuned into the wood at the tip of the tool, and I hope to keep learning and maybe give back some of what I was given by this wonderful craft.
