John,
I read your wood central tutorial and had a few questions if you don't mind?
I've found some 5k CFLs But how many lumens? And where could I find a grey background or maybe a window shade? Also, I happen to have an old projector screen; would that work as a background?
Thanks!
The projector screen is NOT a good background because it is reflectorized. You can get background paper from a camera store that caters to professional photographers. Also mail order suppliers like B&H are good sources. You might be able to find gray construction paper that is large enough at an art supply store. However, NEVER use colored construction paper. There is also Varitone and Flotone graduated background paper (which is actually PVC).
The number of lumens really isn't the question since distance from subject, reflectors, diffusers, ISO, and other exposure settings all play a part in how much light you need. Since most cameras have auto-exposure the shutter will stay open as long as necessary to get a proper exposure. However, it is desirable to get very bright lights. When I use two 500 watt lights my exposure time is still close to one second.
