platform to stand on?

Other than building one, is there a platform out there somewhere to buy that isn't $300 dollars? Sister is too short (about 8 inches) for the table I set the benchtop lathe on and I don't want to cut the legs off the table. I foresee her turning career not being too long.

A pallet? If that is too short, 2 pallets screwed together. Top it off with a sheet of plywood if you want to be fancy.

At the risk of overthinking and therefore over-engineering this you might:
- observe your sister while she is turning to figure out where she puts her feet. Will Lerrums at MASW makes the turning studio platforms extend beyond the headstock and under the bed of the lathe by notching out for the feet under the headstock.
- 8" would probably twist my ankle, or worse, if I stepped off without looking. Perhaps a toe kick around the perimeter would prevent an accident and avoid having your sister end her turning career early because of injury.

I did make a platform for shorter turners to use when in my shop. I worry about them falling off the edge and not remembering that they are up in the air a bit.

Unless the platform covers the rest of your shop, I’d say you’re asking for problems. Cut the legs off or build another bench the right height.

Hopefully it ends up being a moot point. Working on these this afternoon and apparently she is the decorator/director/dictator? and I'm the peon running the lathe etc..

The walnut one ended up 20 inches tall with his hat.

I built one for our club as the wheels on lathe added too much height. I painted the perimeter red to remind step.

For my grandkids I used 4 layers of 2” thick pink foam board from Home Depot with duct tape to hold them together. Very light and easy to move out of the way when not needed.

"Pink Wood" does dent when an adult stands on it, but I wonder if a cover sheet of, say, 1/4" plywood would address that issue? Admittedly a "build it" solution, but simple enough.
