The pull cord on this unit broke off inside the filter today when I pulled it to turn it on. It has two speeds which were controlled by pulling the cord. Actually quite surprised it hasn't worn out before. I opened the unit up and this is what I found: switch.jpgswitch 2.jpg
I was hoping I could by pass the switch and control the unit on and off with a remote at the power supply. I'm not very good with electrical things and would appreciate your thoughts on this matter. Thank you.
 
A little google'n indicates the switch should be marked L, 1, and 2 where the wires go in. The two "on" positions connect L-1 or L-2. Which is high and low depends on the order the switch rotates thru. L is going to be line (from the wall cord) and 1 and 2 will go to the motor. L is probably black if I'm seeing your photo right and they followed conventions. You should be able to connect the L wire to 1, see if that's the speed you want (if not, connect to 2). If you connect the 2 wrong ones together (1-2 that both go to the motor) nothing will happen. If the terminal connectors that are there won't mate together, you'll have to snip/strip and use the proper size wire nut.
Obvs unplug everything first. And cap off or tape or otherwise safely insulate the other wire.
All else fails a replacement is like $8 on amazon - look for "ze-228s"
 
Piling on to Dave's information above. This is a link to an Amazon switch that includes installation instructions. From what I can tell the electrical connections are friction fit (pull out / push in). I interpret the instruction to use a small screwdriver as meaning to use the screwdriver as a lever/pry bar to reduce the friction on the wire. I'm confident that if you follow the instructions you'll be successful.

I have the same unit. There should be a wiring diagram inside where you took the plate off too get at the switch. I replaced it with toggle switch from HD with a center "off" or NO and NC to the right and left.
 
Thank you everyone. I just got back from Menards and again I assumed the sales guy was experienced. Wrong-he gave me a 3 speed switch, not a 2 speed, which they have in stock. I guess I could call this an education as I'm learning alot about ceiling fan switches. My bad, I should have looked more closely.
 
When the motherboard with the IR receiver for my filter failed, I just retired the remote, got a generic three speed switch and wired it to a switch box near where I work.

That looks like a great fix Pat. Unfortunately my knowledge of electricity is below zero. So many things in life now to figure out: camera, iPhone, television. Sometimes I just like to sit and make shavings. Actually sometimes I like to just sit and watch the birds at the feeder.
 
I have been an elelctrician for 35 years. the 3 speed switch will work. You just tape off-wirenut the extra wire. It is important to carefully match the wire color to the same lettered loction so it matches the original switch. Be careful and it will work out fine.
