Guys,
Some may remember a picture of a 1000-lb mesquite burl I plan to turn. The lathe will be modified in the coming week - I will start with a spur-drive and, after finding optimum axis, will go to a faceplate. I plan to use Oneway's 8" and I will use all holes.
During the initial outside shaping (hopefully a globe) I'll continue with the tail-stock / live-center. I'm hoping to come up with a way to use my steady-rest by attaching a run-way for the wheels near the opening - that may or may not work.
But with the steady-rest or hanging it all out by the faceplate, I need quality screws. I currently use SS 1.25" #14 oval heads in Oneway's 6" faceplate to secure logs up to 400-lbs - the mesquites are always end-grain as is the case here - never had a problem. I plan to drill out the outside holes on the 8" faceplate for .25" screws.
SO THE QUESTION: Does anyone know of sharper, deeper thread screws than the stuff at the Home Depot's?
My hope is there is someone out there making better screws. Something akin to the screw in a screw-chuck.
Ps. Calling me an idiot will only confirm you have a grasp for the obvious - your dear moderator has already made that point.
