Need ideas on turning large table base

I am struggling with how to create a blank for this dining table base and at the same time save some wood & Weight.
I plan on makiing the base in two pieces, the bottom piece is what I am struggling with.
Am I asking for trouble with the example glue-up shown, or is there a better way to approach this.
I also plan on adding riser blocks to my Delta 16x46 lathe to make this work.
I have never done something like this, so I could really use some suggestions.

That type of glue up, using staves, is appropriate. A compound angle can be used so that the staves tilt inward, saving some board thickness. This can be done on a table saw with a taper leg jig (can buy or diy as I did), and tilting the blade.

A search for stave segmenting, here and on the web, will generate a lot of info. Think through how you will hold the work for each step of cutting it down.

Thanks Doug, I did not think about tilting the staves (good idea). My plan was to put a plug in the top & bottom for the centers
