instant gallery

I think that it was the second time that I went to SWAT I took this small acorn box. On the inside it held a real bur oak acorn. For that reason, I gave it the title, "A Real Nut Case"

I was sort of surprised by the number of comments including some from the professional demonstrators there.

Of course, that meant that the following picture is ... a real nut case exposed (bad pun).

I came right to the end of this to comment. Have been a bit busy with a hurricane and earthquake but all seems good now.
The instant gallery is where you as a maker show off what you are making. Its that simple. If you think you are going to be the star of the show get a life. If you think your work is going to gather crowds you just may look into a mirror a bit often and like what you see. Time and actual disinterest in what a person does has a way of knocking wind out of sails of those that think the wood item they did belongs in Gods own collection. OK, they all do so to speak but thats esoteric.
What gets to me are items that get to me. Whether color, shape, design, overall concept. I have been accused of being a guy who does pure form. OK. I am a sucker for well shaped bowl. Nothing more exciting than a flowing form. When the eye walks around a work I go man oh man thats good. But thats me. I put in work I like. But most have seen my signature for many years and they sort of yawn. I do have some exciting work I am putting in the Hawaii Forest Industries show this month. will it garner attention or acclaim? No idea. I had great fun doing them. Thats what counts. If you gave a work all you had dont look back. Making is what makes you a maker. A maker is one who makes. If you like what you did be proud to display it.

Well put indeed, Kelly.

Frankly, I was shocked when my work was chosen for the Critique. The IG, at least for me, is an exercise in how many times can I say "wow" before my jaw starts to hurt.

Not that I want to rush home and try to copy what others do, but rather to walk through the room three or four times a day to try to absorb the variety of methods, materials, design principals, and philosophies on display and then walk away enriched by the efforts of others. Putting something of my own in the show helps me to connect to the "sharing" that is, after all, the whole idea of the IG.

I have to add that I display in the spring at an mixed media show....it is competitive

I also help display the items......one of the things we try to do while displaying is to show each item highlighted, where another item does not overwhelm others work

as you can imagine, being competitive, the artists try to make their piece in whatever median, visually overwhelming

we have several spots around the gallery where you can put a single piece that because it is so overwhelming that it does not detract from pieces next to it

this experience plus instant galleries has influenced the direction and starting of new series as I travel the learning curve

woodturning I believe should join the other medians of expression......the other artist are just as passionate as woodturners

Sometimes meaning gets lost in words, but the idea of being visually overpowering as a design goal doesn't sound like the right direction, at least from my perspective. I would like for the things that I make to be captivating which requires something other than just visual impact. I am nowhere near that goal, but I continue to learn and slowly inch my way along.

learning is mostly an individual thing....everyone's goal is different

thqt is what I meant by overwhelming

application of that learning that determines the final result or so to speak accomplishment.

we never have the same judge when we have a show, the judge is always from out of town, each judgement tells what the judge likes, it makes a lot of difference on background of the judge.......sometimes it's craft or art, art or craft........always interesting opening night
