I just renewed my AAW membership for 2011. Anyone else?

I renewed the family for two more years. John Lucas is right by the way. There is no elite folks in the AAW. But those that have been around a long time do deserve the respect they are given. Experience means something. Expertise in turning combined with political skills, the ability to speak and write well. My two favorite AAW prezs were David Ellsworth and Alan Lacer. Elite? Move into the future ladies and gentlemen. Pick a person who you would say is part of the elite group and send them a polite email and strike up a conversation. See what you get back. Dont be a pig and dont be demanding. But as John said. If you did not know who they were? It would not matter anyway. Cause this is one of the most giving fields I think there is. An overbearing and demanding individual however who thinks my time is worthless unless its spent on them? This boy can get pretty rude. Its a big world but a small group of turners. To me a value exists in being a member. The journal alone is worth the price of admission. I disagree with the person who feels its not written well. Its written for us turners.

Well spoken Kelly, I would add "it is written for us turners" mostly by turners.
 
I renewed mine on about the 30th of December. The People, Magazine, and Organization, are great. I have not seen the "elite" either. I personally have seen more criticism of the less than typical turnings than the more traditional stuff. I have found the more well known turners eager to give advice and share techniques than the other way around.

We are so fortunate to have a Art/Craft Organization that promotes what we do on every level. This has not only made a venue for our professional members but has also spurred development of equipment and products that we all enjoy today. As the different segments of our art/craft evolve we all benefit. I want to thank everyone that has a different idea than I, as it would not be so entertaining or fun if we all did the same thing.

AAW Renewal

One of the changes in the AAW last year was the reorganization of the American Woodturner and the placement of the new editor Betty Scarpino. I think she has done more than a credible job. Betty Scarpino is probably hard working, intelligent, fair, and competent. I do not know her but may have been in an industrial arts course with her at University of Missouri in the seventies. My opinion was not directed at her but a statement about the publication which many have said needed new direction and has achieved that direction. If we are at the point where opinions are scoffed at then we may indeed be shifting toward elitism.

Betty-I ask your tolerance for injecting your name into this discussion.

My reply was not a scoff of your opinion; the wording you chose to express that opinion was unnecessarily rude. Overlooking your manners in that message, your posts appear to be well written – how about you submit an article for the Journal?

AAW Renewal

Owen-Thank you for your suggestion that I write an article. Not now as I am too overloaded with other activities, mainly family obligations. No joking, by the time obligations are ended I may be six feet under or smoke in the air.

I have written over 200 short stories, some of them publishable, but never published because that was not my intent in writing. I also wrote some reviews of woodworking shows in the eighties for local publications, one was about a show that I juried. Talk about elitism.

Also, talk about manners, the professor who taught at MU chewed me out unmercifully for gluing an end piece on a table crossgrained, not allowing for movement.

Dabney Doty??? Yes, he would definitely have chewed out someone for such a terrible transgression ... at length, with a lecture afterward about grain direction and glue joints and whatever else he could throw in.

I was U of Missouri, 1975 - 1981, industrial arts, primarily woodshop with Doty, the master of "if it starts out square, it will end up square," and "equalization of wear theory," among his many other sayings. Lovely man and I learned a lot from him, with safety in the woodshop paramount.

It's okay using my name, but just to be correct, I took over as editor beginning in the fall of 2008, with my first issue published in 2009. Last year (2010) was my second full year as editor. The reorganization of the journal happened while Larry Somer was ED, although in between me applying for the job and actually being hired, Larry was "released from employment" and Mary Lacer became ED. Last year's (2010) reorganization had nothing to do with the journal.

The AW journal isn't supposed to be a literary achievement, but it looks to be the result of good effort to make it a quality publication. Good on you, Betty! It's actually one of the highlights of my membership......along with the forums and galleries.

Yes, I have my opinions about the directions of the AAW, and who does the steering, and how......but, I still think the AAW is an organization that is worth being a member of.....and, my actions speak of this!

Just signed up for first time. I have mostly turned pens and other small items on my Jet mini. Recently purchased a 14" jet and learning to turn bowls and other items thru a mentor and also joining a woodturning club. Derryl

I don't recall exactly when I renewed. I think it was in October.

Welcome to the AAW. I hope you enjoy your time here. Please don't hesitate to ask questions. There are lots of good (and great) turners here who'll do their best to set you straight. Also, post some pictures of your work. We all love to see what other turners are creating.
