When drilling a hole with the Jacobs chuck in the tailstock and the piece chucked in the headstock:

- Don't use your hand to hold the chuck if you think it will catch and spin in the hole.
- Do use a rod (knockout bar, for example) in one of the chuck key holes, braced against the lathe bed, to help restrain the chuck from spinning.
- Do grab the restraining rod down far enough so your knuckles don't get hammered by the turning.
