For those of you who use a Oneway Stronghold chuck, you might be familiar with this particular quirk it has....

The maximum tenon grip circumference of the #2 serrated jaws is 2 3/8", and the minimum tenon grip of the #3 serrated jaws is 2 3/4".

Because of this, you cannot make a tenon within this "no man's land".

Is there a solution to this with the current Stronghold serrated jaws that are available? (My Stronghold chucks are all more than 20yrs old, so this issue may have been solved in current production chucks.....?)

Or, what brand of full sized chucks can grip a tenon, with serrated jaws, within this gap?

Thanks for your help in solving or answering this problem/question..... :)

I just used a larger area of waste wood on the tendon area as 2" of waste. My blanks were mainly found wood that I cut for my use. U buy specific blanks. I only had #3 jaws & the spigot jaws for turning. I had the I think jumbo jaws but learned to jam chuck so did not use them very often. My stronghold oneway chuck was approaching 20 years and was a great value as it was a 1 and done purchase.

I have the ONEWAY profiled jaws there is a gap ONEWAY says the number 2 jaws open to 3 1/4 and the Number 3 jaws close to 3 7/8. 0F842C9F-EF7D-4EAE-820C-34F958C9C336.jpeg

I have never found this to be an issue with bowls. On green bowls I turn my green tenons to 2.5” or 4.75” then I can always turn a 2” or 4” tenon in the dried bowls. I have had a gap problem with square spindle stock that won’t fit either Chuck so I turn a tenon fo fit the number 2 jaws driving it between center- a nuisance extra step… I don’t have the tower jaws.

According to that, the gap is even larger. However, the specs I gave are accurate, and measured from my own serrated jaws. What I wonder, is if the difference between the kind of jaws used may be different, and the same serrated Stronghold jaws may have changed dimensions over the years.....?

Anyway, it's a moot point, because I'd like to have the option of making tenons within the unusable gap that these Stronghold jaws don't cover. If this has been addressed over the years, that would be a solution. If there is another full sized chuck that's currently available, I'd be interested in knowing which ones do cover the aforementioned gap.

Vicmarc has a similar gap, but at 4 inches. Kind of annoying in that I like that tenon size for bowls in the 10 inch range.

@Marc (#5):
Actually, the Vicmarc Step Jaws (a Raffan design) are made to fill the gap between the Standard and the 4" jaws

I was only interested in the ~ 3" option, so I searched high and low and found these not too far from you:

They work perfectly, but sadly, they're presently out of stock.

Sorry Odie - not very useful in a Stronghold context.

That 3" dovetail has been missing across all manufacturers for some reason. Vicmarc custom-made the 3" for a while but for their vm100 chuck and jawline. I know this because all my jaws fit my vm120/vm150. I was contemplating the purchase of the chuck to own this size, but I ended up custom-turning 3" dovetail jaws out of UHMW on Axminsters flat jaws. Oneway has flat jaws that enable you to custom make your own size jaws as well. This may be a solution for you as well.

Got to wonder why so many manufacturers have these gaps. My old Nova set is the same way. Then I bought a Nova Infinity chuck from an acquaintance in the woodturning club then bought the remaining jaws to make a full set. These are sized in a logical manner and have a decent overlap from one jaw set to the next. They get used constantly.

I have the same issue with my Stronghold jaws, but generally fill that gap using a Record Power SC4 with 100 mm Deep Gripper jaws. Might not be what you're looking for - it's a dovetail at the top, with serrations below to grab a longer tenon, but it gives me a solid grip in that 3 - 3 3/4" range.

I've never had a design that was built around the size of the tenon. Make the tenon a little smaller or larger has never been an issue for 37 years.

Well heck....that's exactly what I have been doing! :)

There are those occasions where I'd like to have a tenon that falls within the gap, though. Sometimes, dealing with woods that have voids and/or other irregularities make that issue come up once in awhile.
