Hello there!
I am Fernando Machado, hailing from the countryside of Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.
I am a designer, woodworker, craftsman, and began woodturning about four to five years ago.
My focus is on bowls, surfaces and hollow forms, eventually...
I currently own an old, heavy, industrial duplicating lathe that I have adapted to hand turning.
I mostly make my own tools and only very recently made my first bow gouge, and sharpening jig, game changer!

The work of David Ellsworth has inspired me and his book on woodturning is an invaluable source of knowledge and wisdom.
I look forward to the exchange and to continue learning here!

Best regards,
Fernando.

Hello and welcome, Fernando! I'm sure you'll find lots of information and inspiration here, as well as inspire others! I especially like the form of the piece in your third photo - one of my favorite shapes to make as well. I don't turn bowls often, mostly when someone wants one - in fact I hadn't turned any for several years, then when a student wanted to make one I had to hurry and turn a few to make sure I gave him good instructions! All that worked out well - he made his first bowl and I had a few to give away.

I like Ellsworth's book too. A few years ago a mutual friend took me to visit Ellsworth at his house and shop in PA( before he moved south to NC.) I had the good fortune to talk to him and experience some of his turnings up close. Fascinating guy! He had a huge snooker table upstairs in a room with some of his pieces lining the wall - and floor.

Woodturnings, David E., Ellis W., me, and the edge of the snooker table!

A couple of other books I really like are "Turning Wood" by Richard Raffan, and "Fundamentals of Woodturning" by Mike Darlow. When I started I learned a lot about woodturning from these two books and still use them today. (I keep a few extra copies on my shelves to loan to students)

Hello John and thank you for the warm welcome!
The piece that you mention is my first successful attempt at turning a hollow shape.
It is about 15" x 6", turned from a roadside find.
Thank you for the books recommendations and I loved your picture with Mr. Ellsworth, your friend and the pool table!

Cheers!
Fernando.

Kkkk.

Maybe we should continue in english, no?
I mean, for the group?

Ha! I was following some of this with the help of Google Translate! I can follow a little Spanish and some of the portuguese words are similar, but mostly the untranslated conversation is, should I say, entertaining!

Note for forum programmers: if you have a slow day consider adding a translate-with-a-click option!
