Thank you for all the help with prior question. Getting my new Record Power set up and firmly mounted on my bench. Set up two stage dust collection system venting outside. Looking for recommended set up to best collect dust etc. at the lathe. Any ideas appreciated.
Thank you all very much!

I bought one of these at Woodcraft. They are $150 but I got it for $50 on their sale table. It picks up all of the dust while sanding so I don’t have to wear my respirator. You could could make something like it fairly cheap.

I’d still wear at least a mask. Bet it doesn’t get everything . . .

I am grateful to AAW and all that help us. I appreciate all the learning resources.

Well, this is a link to a video I did a long time ago about the hood I made for my lathe so I can sand with no dust mask since it does capture EVERYTHING!

The "big gulp" type funnels do work and get maybe 90% of the dust, but a fair amount still goes into the air. You can make several variations with no problems. The one thing I didn't do with the hood I use is make it so it could stay on the lathe as I turn, and it would help contain the dust better. You can buy sheet stock of the plastic in sheets 5 by 10 feet, then cut it to size. I did find the 1/4 inch stuff to be rather stiff, but it can be bent to shape. Probably far more than most can use, but for a group, not a problem...

Some very clever solutions. I do have a moveable dust collector hood (connected to my Dust Right) behind where I am turning the wood and it is fairly good at picking the dust, but does not pull in any shavings at all. Would it make sense to mount a shavings collector right beneath my lathe that also connects to the Dust Collector or would that reduce the suction too much?

IMO - easier to shovel the shavings at the lathe than have them filling your DC ... even if you have a cyclone / separator.

I have tried many different confirmations for dust collection. I like the BMWood attachment linked below probably the best. It does not get in the way of the banjo. It pulls most fine dust and is easily adjustable. I bought mine from Amazon. In the UK Axminster sells it as well.

Go to YouTube and look up Tomislav Tomasic. He set his up the same as Richard Raffin and it seems to work very well.
I can confirm, their design works very well.

My contribution to this thread, from more recent times, in this thread below. (Sharing information, that's what it is all about.)

At this point I'm not collecting the chips, but for sanding I have this made from a Harbor Freight roller stand and a Powertec hood from Amazon. I do have a Big Gulp, but this one seems to concentrate the air a little better.

One thing to consider if you have vented your system outside, you will have a pressure imbalance negating the negative pressure of your system. Unless you have an open door/window or some other form of venting between inside and outside your system will develop a negative pressure inside the shop which will reduce prevent any flow within your system
