Hi Dorman, welcome! Woodturning is, as John said fun. It is also versatile. Your choices are virtually unlimited from utilitarian to artsy works. Within this special group of people you can get support for just about anything. Thumb through the gallery and you will see what I mean.

Welcome Dorman!! I just turned 66 and have been turning since I was 14 in my dad's cabinet shop. It wasn't until I joined a local club (2012), however, that I really began this journey. Even if you don't have a club nearby, there are groups that meet via computer. I just joined the Lancaster (PA) Area Woodturners, despite being 1.5 hours away. They have a Saturday open shop once a month, an online meeting and demo once a month, AND an online coffee-hour every Thursday morning. There are generally 45 men and women in those sessions from around the globe. From finishes to work-holding to wood-sourcing-- all are common topics nearly every week. There are many similar clubs doing the same.

From the AAW site the nearest chapter (club) to you might be in Louisville. (Some around here drive further than that!) Many also have zoom sessions, but that's not nearly as good as being there.
