My understanding from books and their pictures is that you cut with the edge in the direction of your cut. (edge to right of tip when cutting from rim to center inside of bowl).
The DVD instructing the use of the Ellsworth signature gouge shows the left edge during the interior finishing cut. Is this same procedure to be used with the conventional bowl gouge also?

Using the left cutting edge with the flute facing up, is a great way to take final cuts with a gouge on the inside of a bowl. CAUTION...be careful. If you roll the gouge a little too far left you'll get a nasty catch, because the cutting edge will be unsupported. Since it's a final cut, you'll probably break the bowl. You should probably practice this cut before using it in a bowl. You can use a gouge with a modified side grind for this as you'll be cutting out near the tip.
