My old, modest scraper collection needs an upgrade or two. Maybe three. Anyway, Carter & Son tool listings for 1" wide x 3/8" thick scrapers of various profiles all state "9-1/2" overall" for blade length.

Does "9-1/2" overall" include the tang, or is 9-1/2" for the blade section only, separate from the tang?

(If separate from the tang, the overall would be about 12", maybe. Including the tang, I'd guess the cutting blade length outside the handle to be about 7" or so.)

I'm just curious, and I'd be turning my own handles.

Thanks.

Honestly, for scrapers, I don't think it matters a great deal - you'd have very little hanging off the tool rest on the work piece side (if you do have a lot of extension, then even a little catch is gonna HURT.. don't ask me how I know....) the rest of it is pretty much leverage, but given the tools I have gotten from various sources, I'd have to think the measurement would include tang... It would still leave quite a bit of tool left to grind away - I got some M2 HSS on Amazon , I believe they were 10 inch overall, to cut my own scrapers out of , even after cutting back for a tang (1-3/4") I still have a LOT of tool left for that scraper I made... so much so that I'm tempted to make a longer tang on the other piece - once I put a handle on it (10 inch handle of hardwood) the balance is really heavy on the tool end (in a way maybe a good thing, harder to lift it off tool rest?)

However, if you really needed to know, I'd suggest that contacting the company directly might be your best bet (and also give you a "feel" for customer service if you ever have a problem..?)
