Turning of the Week for May 15, 2023

My selection for Turning of the Week of May 15, 2023, is “First Light, First Song" by Ronald Campbell. This is the latest in a series of bird sculptures that Ronald has posted this year. Earlier ones include “Chicklet” and “Looney Bird”. Skillfully carved and painted into a wonderful blend...

Turning of the Week for May 8, 2023

A tough decision this month. So many excellent pieces. After much looking, I settled on "Callisto" by Dennis Ramos. I love the contrast and perfect form. The contrast of the texture vs smooth wood and the color of the textured areas balanced nicely with the bottom wood. Very well done.

Turning of the Week, May 1, 2023

My choice for turning of the week, May 1, 2023, is Dave Roberts' "Arbutus Menzies Burl". His story about harvesting this wood was both interesting and challenging. He turned a beautiful form from green to final thickness, and let the wood do what it was going to do. A wonderful choreography...

Turning of the Week for April 24, 2023

Another great week to be choosing the TOTW! So many nice pieces! In the end, "Lifting Off" by Mike Foster checked off all the marks for me. I had 3 as the finalists. In the end, Mike's photography was the best by far. The turning is flawless. The carving is spectacular and the acrylics, are as...

Turning of the Week for April 17, 2023

My choice for Turning of the Week for April 17, 2023, is "Bradford Bag-o-Sand" by Michael Anderson. I can envision that this beautiful hollowform with its "just right" curvature could easily be mistaken for the real deal. And, for me, the coup de grâce is the texturing that is the convincing...

Turning of the Week for April 10, 2023

It's always fun to look through the galleries to select the TOTW. I look for a good picture: a clear or gradient background is a must. A cluttered shop in the back or your living room is not an appealing picture. This week's honor goes to Thomas Scurto Davis and his amazing piece called...

Turning of the Week for April 3, 2023

My choice for Turning of the Week for April 3rd, 2023 is “Chaco Passages” by Jim McLain. Jim has produced some very beautiful pieces in this series. The contrast between the fantastic grain of the smooth surfaces and the added brickwork is wonderful. I love the subtle textures and slight...

Turning of the Week, March 20, 2023

My selection for Turning of the Week for March 20, 2023 is "Twisted" by Alan Miotke. Such an interesting piece. A stunning product of topological vision cut from a pleasing curve. Alan stated that he cut apart a segmented vase form to make it. He makes it sound soooo simple…..

Turning of the Week, March 13, 2023

This week is John Lucas's turn to choose the TOTW. In his own words: "I have picked Mark Wardle's Pot from Banksia. He said he was trying to capture a clay pot and he did. In fact, it is outstanding how well he did it. I loved this the minute I saw it. The textured and carved details are...

Turning of the Week for March 6, 2023

These turning of the week selections are becoming much more difficult. The number of exceptional pieces being posted on a daily basis has me changing my selection several times a day. There were at least 6 or 8 that I could have chosen, but we're only allowed one. So, my choice is "Elephant...

Turning of the Week for February 27, 2023

My selection for Turning of the Week of February 27, 2023, is "Round and Brown" by Andy Chen. At first glance, this just looks like another brown bowl with a rough finish. I’m glad I took Andy’s advice and looked at his YouTube video on thin-stacked paper bowls. I found his bowl to be an...

    TOTW for February 20, 2023

I’m posting this for Bill Boehme, who had several things going on this week. Here is Bill’s choice: My selection is Ron Cambell’s "Loony Bird". It reminded me of Michael Hosaluk’s turnings where he cut up a turned form on the bandsaw and then rotated the pieces to create various shapes. I...

Turning of the week for February 13th, 2023

My choice for Turning of the Week for February 13, 2023, goes to Bruce Lee Jones's fabulously executed heirloom work of art titled "Rising From the Ashes" This piece checked all the boxes for me, and it touched me personally. After the loss of my wife, I felt the world had ended. I have now...

Turning of the Week for February 6th, 2022

My choice for Turning of the Week for February 6th, 2022 is “Lisa’s Urn” by Russ Braun. This beautiful, colorful, and the very creative piece is a “work of art”, albeit a highly unusual form for a cremation urn. Russ’s explanation of how this piece came together - as it relates to his beloved...

Turning of the week January 23, 2023

For the Turning of the Week. for January 23, 2023, I selected "Four Play" by John Lucas. This is a lovely, somewhat whimsical piece combining bowls that appear to float while being held aloft by natural-looking structures that probably never existed in nature. The textures and colors contrast...

Turning of the week January 16, 2023

This week it was John Lucas’ turn to choose. In his own words: My choice for Turning of the Week for January 16, 2023 is Twist on a Theme by Clifton Chisum. As someone who has used a lot of compressed wood I found his use as finials on ornaments extremely inventive and well done. I know a lot...

Turning of the Week for January 9, 2023

I began this Woodturning journey as a bowl turner. Though my journey has taken a different path, my heart will always belong to my first love, a well turned bowl. Michael Anderson’s "Black Oak Calabash", in my opinion, meets the exceptional and challenging criteria for making a well-turned...

Turning of the Week for the week beginning January 2, 2023 Happy New Year Turners!

My selection for the Turning of the Week (TOTW) for the week beginning January 2, 2023, is “Pepperwood Burl box” by Jeff Jackson. The beauty of the burl is directly complemented by the elegant shape which appears to have an oriental motif. What is amazing is the talent Jeff has shown in creating...

Turning of the Week for December 26, 2022

After a 15-yard penalty for a false start, here we go. @Bill Boehme has selected the beautiful work by Lyle Jamieson "Cherry Goblet" for this week's TOTW honors. Bill's words: " It is a simple, unadorned long stemmed goblet, but it has perfectly proportioned flowing lines." Lyle named his...
