This is a piece of wood I got from a buddy on a woodworking forum I frequent. I think it pretty much qualifies as "curly" maple. :-) It finished up at about 18" x 14" x 3 1/4". The walls are about 1/2" thick. Finish is Antique Oil and lacquer, 3-wheel buffed. The...
A footed natural edge closed form in red mulberry. This piece is part of my "Red Mulberry Collection", a set of commissioned pieces turned from a few chunks left over from the removal of a large tree that once graced a private home in downtown Annapolis. The owners wanted the pieces...
This bowl is ash, about 10 1/2 by 13 inches and the most striking feature is probably not the foot, but the bark on the far side. The non-bark edges were left rough in keeping with the overall theme.
Dimensions: 1.25" h x 1.75" w
A friend from my smaller turning group gave me a branch of very old and dry Rhododendron from a large "tree" he removed many years ago.
The heartwood appeared to be purplish brown. But, when we cut a small section down the middle we saw...

This bowl was turned green, to about 1/4" thick, then finish turned about a week later to just over 1/8" t.
It was finished with Nitrocellulose sealer and paste wax.
This piece of cedar from North Carolina had some amazing figure and once I turned the edge to about 3/32 I decided to leave much of the mass, and create a "bowl-within-a-bowl" form.
This bowl has a natural bark edge in a square shape with a 2 3/4" w by 1" h bowl in the center of the 5 3/4" square. Total height of the piece is 1 1/2" due to the upturn of the square wing. Buffed Lacquer finish.
Madrone burl with black lacquered maple foot. The lid is slumped glass with a brass finial. Turned from a green blank, this piece took many hours of thinking and planning before it ever saw the lathe. About 18 x 8.
Well this piece started out to be a vase 6 inches taller than what is shown here ... now I guess its a bowl? I got the outside all shaped and sanded. It was going to be my biggest piece yet and I was quite pleased with myself, nice flowing lines and beautiful grain.
I started hollowing out...
I hate it, my wife loves it... go figure!
Thought I would post it and see what you all thought.
Box Elder burl. 13" wide, 8" tall and 1/4"+ thick ... I left it a little thick so more of the burl spears would be left along the edge. Sanded to 1200 grit, soaked with BLO...
12-1/2"x11"x6"
Black Acacia
This is my latest iteration on this wing concept. I introduced more curvature to the bowl form and selected a log containing several knots. I like the flared rim but it created an area that was very difficult to finish between it and the wing. I was...
This bowl is 11 1/2" wide and 5" tall on the shortest side and 7 1/2" tall on the highest side. The wall thickness is 3/16" throughout.
The wood is Butternut. The size is 10" dia x 8.5" dia x 5.5" tall. It's finished with Danish oil then buffed with white diamond followed by carnauba wax.
