After a period of turning more functional pieces I am back to creating some things that are more artsy . This footed open form is called Holuhraun which is the name of an Icelandic volcano that spectacularly erupted about 10 years ago in the central highlands. The rib that extends from slot in...

I attempted to fill a couple of large bug holes in this form, but when the compound dried, the color was way off and a little distracting. Decided to turn this situation into a “design opportunity” and brushed on several coats of black milk paint. Considered sanding it smooth, but I...
One of the pieces for my application to the Mississippi Craftsmen's Guild. Black Ash hollow form with a Cherry finial that technically makes the entire piece nearly a foot tall.
Ornate sphere, with walls at about 3/16" thick. Made from a single piece of Bradford Pear (well, two pieces– the cap was parted off and then glued back in after hollowing). After piercing, it was gilded in a metal reactive gold and placed in a Box Elder burl, hopefully to look like a relic...
Mimosa, repaired with black epoxy. Ebonized walnut collar and finial. Mostly a practice in getting a glossy finish that will stay shiny. Thinned tung oil and thin Parfix.
It's like this hollow form was looking for keywords to check off– feathering, ripple/quilting, spalting, luster, and decent amount of chatoyancy. Oil and CA finish with dyed maple lid and finial.
Once turned end grain soft Maple spherical hollow form. Unlike Soft Maple Spherical Hollow Form this one was done end grain. Compleatly different effect for sure. I think I like this better with this crazy wood. 10" x 10" Finished with linseed oil and beeswax.
Once turned 'full log' soft Maple spherical hollow form with piths galore! Well, almost spherical. My first run at a pure spherical shape just by eye. Same tree as Soft Maple Hollow Form. I'm wondering if there is too much going on with the wood? Thoughts? I still like it and have more in line...
Every day the dogs and I walk by this downed tree. Every day I wonder if it is spalting, it is a maple after all. Two years I wondered until I finally ask the neighbor if I can have it, or at least cut into it and see. Getting the green light and hoping for spalting galore I find none. What I...

What a pleasure to turn this scarce Hawaiian wood once reserved for royals.
I haven’t had as much time in the shop as I would like lately. It sure is nice to have wood like this to work with when I do make it to the lathe.
Straight from the firewood pile! It has been a busy fall and I couldn't resist the hollow form practice. One of my thinnest walls and smallest openings. Black Oak finished with linseed oil and bees wax. 12" x 6"
3.5”h x 3”ø
This is half of one of the nicest pieces of red maple burl I’ve come across. Went super high-gloss to bring out the chatoyance and emphasize the variations in figure and color. Going to take a little break from maple in favor of some cherry and walnut, but looking forward to turning...
4.5”h x 4”ø
The wood for this piece was from the same log as the super punky hollow form I posted a week or so ago. This part of the log seemed to be in better shape, so figured it was worth a spin on the lathe. It cut and sanded better than the previous round, but was still very dry and soaked...
3.5” x 3.5”
Most of the maple I turn is of the soft varieties, but I think this is sugar maple (please correct me if not!). Hauled a bunch home last year and it’s taken on a beautiful spalt. I really love the gray tones and the thin arc of spalting across the shoulder of this piece.
6.5”h x 4”d
Enjoyed every minute of making this piece. I’ve been drawn to these void pieces lately. There’s something about the negative space and seeing the interior that I think is super interesting.
4.5” x 4.5”
This was one of those pieces that I nearly gave up on a few times. The dramatic spalting drew me in, but the wood was very punky in several spots (probably too punky tbh). The mouth of this vessel is much larger than my usual because the original rim disintegrated as soon as I...
Masur birch
3.5”d x 3”h
Did most of the shaping with a 1/2” bowl gouge and used a set of 3/8” Hollow Pro rocket tools for hollowing. Finished with blonde shellac and buffed on a wheel.
