Exploring the taller and narrower neck vase here is the latest. Still need to get the proportions better but a good step forward from the last one. 13x7" Walnut finished with linseed oil and bees wax.
Inspired by but not achieved the spectacularness of Jason Meneely's, Night Fall. I've not ventured into coloring yet. I am so impressed with Jason's work I plan to try dyeing sometime soon. I need to work on this technique first. My shape is not what I started out going for. I had planned to...

After finishing this piece, I had to give myself a reality check: the exterior was ugly. My attempts at filling some of the bug holes had not played out like I’d hoped and the result wasn’t kind on the eyes.
I really liked the light color and figure on the inside, so decided to make...
Greetings! I'm working on a rather flat-topped ash hollow form right now. While it's not perfectly flat on top, it does have a pretty shallow angle from the opening to the sides of the form (see pics below). I'm wondering the best way to tackle hollowing in this area - should I purchase an...
Mulberry burl live-edge hollow form vessel with Kingman turquoise inlay. No finish on it yet but I'm open to suggestions! Am thinking an oil or wipe-on polycrylic would be nice but I'd prefer something that is either clear or won't overly amber the wood (and doesn't have a strong odor). Approx...

Lots going on in this piece of maple. It was slightly punky in a few spots, but a little Minwax wood hardener helped it sand evenly. Hollowed to 1/4” and finished with dewaxed shellac. Took a few days to get the finish dialed in, but time well spent IMO. I think this one will live on...
This is the other side of the log from the previous, "Bifurcated Hickory Vase" except turned long grain. Once again I was trying to capture the crotch feather in a bifurcation. 12 x 4" Finished with linseed oil and bees wax.
Once again I was trying to capture the crotch feather in a bifurcation. By the time I got this one round the feather was gone but the resulting void was pretty cool so I pressed on. I love the distortion so far. Curious how much more twisting it will do. Just a couple weeks drying. 13 x 6"...

Was draw to the color and figure in this piece of Bigleaf maple. A few coats of danish oil darkened it up a bit and helped bring out some of the deeper red tones. Walls turned to 1/8”; sanded interior and exterior to 400 grit before buffing at the wheel.
After a period of turning more functional pieces I am back to creating some things that are more artsy . This footed open form is called Holuhraun which is the name of an Icelandic volcano that spectacularly erupted about 10 years ago in the central highlands. The rib that extends from slot in...

I attempted to fill a couple of large bug holes in this form, but when the compound dried, the color was way off and a little distracting. Decided to turn this situation into a “design opportunity” and brushed on several coats of black milk paint. Considered sanding it smooth, but I...
One of the pieces for my application to the Mississippi Craftsmen's Guild. Black Ash hollow form with a Cherry finial that technically makes the entire piece nearly a foot tall.
Ornate sphere, with walls at about 3/16" thick. Made from a single piece of Bradford Pear (well, two pieces– the cap was parted off and then glued back in after hollowing). After piercing, it was gilded in a metal reactive gold and placed in a Box Elder burl, hopefully to look like a relic...
Mimosa, repaired with black epoxy. Ebonized walnut collar and finial. Mostly a practice in getting a glossy finish that will stay shiny. Thinned tung oil and thin Parfix.
It's like this hollow form was looking for keywords to check off– feathering, ripple/quilting, spalting, luster, and decent amount of chatoyancy. Oil and CA finish with dyed maple lid and finial.
Once turned end grain soft Maple spherical hollow form. Unlike Soft Maple Spherical Hollow Form this one was done end grain. Compleatly different effect for sure. I think I like this better with this crazy wood. 10" x 10" Finished with linseed oil and beeswax.
Once turned 'full log' soft Maple spherical hollow form with piths galore! Well, almost spherical. My first run at a pure spherical shape just by eye. Same tree as Soft Maple Hollow Form. I'm wondering if there is too much going on with the wood? Thoughts? I still like it and have more in line...
