"And now for something completely different." Trying something new. Uprights are South African Porcupine quills. (NO PORCUPINES WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS VESSEL, WOODTURNERS ON THE OTHER HAND...) I think the wood is Hickory? I was helping Binh clean out a storage space and...
Here a question for the hollow vessel experts and any body else I guess as well
Until recently I have nearly always turned larger vessels ie 1-14"+ in dia with fairly wide mouths, of which allows me good access for sanding.
But now I have embarked on smaller dias around 4-6" with much...
All made from the same tree but not the same log section.
From the left rear;
10" wide x 7" high, oiled and buffed with carnauba wax.
8" wide x 10" high, oiled and buffed with carnauba wax.
6.5" wide x 10" high, no oil, finished with lacquer.

Triggerfish
Triggerfish was hollowed from a piece of Canyon Oak and was designed to showcase this wonderful material. The wood grain for Triggerfish is parallel to the axis as on a spindle turning. Triggerfish's name and form were inspired by a very tasty lunch I had down on the Baja...
This is my first post on the AAW website. I post regularly on WOW and I thought I would share my work here too.
This wood came from a tree that was cut down in a friends yard and saved for me. At first, I thought it might have been a Butternut tree due to the large amount of sapwood in the...
This piece is a quilted maple hollow form, carved with a wood burner, 12 coats of acrylic paint sponged and brushed in. The base is a carved piece of Norfolk Island Pine. This is my latest piece of my 'Why Series'
These pieces came from the same log sectiion.
The sizes are:
Front - 6" dia x 6" tall
Left - 10" dia x 9" tall
Right - 8" dia x 12" tall
They are finished with my oil mix and buffed with tripoli and carnauba wax.
This study was turned twice, carved, textured and colored by brush with acrylics. Colors were layered and sanded back to achieve what you see. The inside was dyed with black India ink. A clear coat was sprayed over everything. After a couple days it was lightly buffed with soft wax. The size...
This is the first piece in this study. It was turned twice, carved, bleached and buffed with white diamond and carnauba wax. The size is 5" dia x 6" tall.
Many thanks to Joe Landon and Chris Pytlik for the inspiration on this first attempt at dying a vessel. Other than the funnel redesign, where I added a small ebony base, this maple HF went along pretty smoothly. About 6" tall and 7.5" wide, it was sanded to 1200, dyed and lacquered...
