I turned this in a club challenge. Those participating were given a piece of cottonwood, told to turn something and add to it. I got a square piece, so out came a square bowl, I added the walnut lid and finial. It is 7x7x4 plus the finial. You can see the worm holes. I hit some with CA and left...
Pagoda box with walnut finial measuring 6 1/2" h x 2" w. This box was turned for one of our local club challenges. Everyone was handed a small limb piece of Pagoda no larger that about 3 1/2" in diameter by about 12" long, and we could turn whatever we wanted out of it. It...
Ash Lidded Bowl with Walnut Finial and Abalone Bead Decoration inside lid. 5 1/2" w x 3" h with 2" finial. This bowl was a real design change. The original piece had a couple of wormholes show up at the last minute and I had to cut the whole middle section out so made it lidded...
This walnut hollow form with ebony finial was turned for the gift exchange at our club's Christmas party. The size is 3.5"Dx4"H and 6.5" overall height. Comments are always welcome.
My youngest daughter and her husband like oriental things. I thought Ray Key's piece on the woodturners catalog would be something they would like. My rendition is maple burl (spalted and punky) with a walnut base and a claro walnut lid. The base is about 6 1/2" wide and 2 1/2" tall...
A finialed hollow form in redwood burl with an African blackwood pedestal and lid, and a Bolivian rosewood finial. The underside of the surface that the lid rests on has been pyrographed to add a bit of lift to the top of the globe. This commissioned piece was named for the dune-like...

Ornament ball is wood of unknown origin with Black Walnut finials. Size: 2" w. x 6 1/2" h. Ornament globe is about 1/8" thick for ease of piercing. I kept the piercing to the center of the globe because I like the contrast of the smooth surface directly connected to the piercing...
Pear Box with Black Walnut Finial. 3 1/2" w. x 6" h.
My first experiment with trying a cross grain box. I can understand now, why most boxes are turned end grain. Even though this beautiful piece of wood was thoroughly dry, it still moved and warped slightly and the lid needed some...
A finialed hollow form in spalted Norway maple and TransTint dyed holly. The finial includes a replication of the hollow form vessel just under the spike. The original block of maple weighed about 55 ounces. The finished piece including the finial weighs 4.5 ounces. This piece is one of the...
Birds eye maple, Bloodwood and Tulipwood.
7 and 1/4 inches square with a 3 and 1/2 bowl opening. Inside, underneath wings and the ball of the finial are all 1/8th inch thick.
Comments welcome
Turned for Chris Wright for a Challenge and Trade at Woodturner's Resource.
Made from a mystery burl and Bubinga, with a single Walnut cutaway spiral that started as a double twist.
The vessel measures 8"x3", and the finial is 5.5"x2.5". The lid is also 5.5"...
A finialed hollow form in Chesnut Oak and Madagascar Ebony. The HF was turned (but not hollowed) during a demonstration that I did during a basic woodturning course that I taught last month at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. It was used as a prototype for a second piece.
Base Diameter...
Make with Walnut and wicker. I was looking for a way to make large pieces with small pieces of wood. The answer was to add wicker. The lid made up of the a ring around the middle, the finial and the wicker between the two. This piece is 18" tall.
