I cleaned up the shop today and found a couple of Box Elder burl caps laying under one of the benches so off to the lathe I went...
The HF is about 1 1/2 inches tall. I like the form but dont like the lip, its to big and to sharp of an angle into the transition, should of rounded it like I...
The vessel is Box Elder burl with some beautiful bright reds and a few bark pockets. Its 5" tall, 4 1/2" wide, 1 1/2" opening on top and 1 3/4" at the base. Sanded to 1200 grit, finished with Waterlox and buffed with carnauba wax.
Comments/critques always welcome.

Well this piece started out to be a vase 6 inches taller than what is shown here ... now I guess its a bowl? I got the outside all shaped and sanded. It was going to be my biggest piece yet and I was quite pleased with myself, nice flowing lines and beautiful grain.
I started hollowing out...
I hate it, my wife loves it... go figure!
Thought I would post it and see what you all thought.
Box Elder burl. 13" wide, 8" tall and 1/4"+ thick ... I left it a little thick so more of the burl spears would be left along the edge. Sanded to 1200 grit, soaked with BLO...
I finally got my new lathe last Friday, a jet 1642, and got a chance to break it in by turning another Box Elder Hollow Form.
This one is 7 1/2" tall, 9" wide and about an 1/8" thick throught the whole piece.
There is a large bark pocket almost half way across the bowl so it was...
I started this bowl about a month ago and finally got around to finishing it.
Its Box Elder burl with the natural edge. Its 6" tall and 7" wide.
Finish is BLO, polished with White Diamond and buffed with carnauba wax.
Comment/critques always welcome.
Thanks,
Shane
This piece is box elder which has been hollowed form both the top and bottom and then the bottom was plugged. It is about 12 inches tall. Dyed with aniline dye. I'm tempted to name it "Aardvark".
These two started out as pieces of very plain box elder. The slots were routed while the pieces were mounted on the lathe. There are 9 spirals on the right and 6 on the left. The one on the right has a ring left around the top to control things, while the one on the left is a bit more...
Flamed Box Elder Urn
Turned from a piece of box elder given to me by my good friends, mentors and outstanding turners Allen & Sherry Hockenbery.
Base: 4 3/4" dia.
Height: 6 7/8"
Diameter: 7 3/4"
Wall Thickness: 3/16"
Finish: Waterlox & Arborwax
The segments were sliced from one chunk, trying for continuous grain but minus the saw kerfs.
7 1/4" long, 2 1/4" largest diameter--wipe-on poly finish and buffed.
Box elder salad bowl - 12 1/2" dia. x 5 1/4" deep. Finished with walnut oil. This was a quickie shot in the bed of my truck, not the greatest locale for a photo.
